Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT
952 PM MDT Sun Mar 15 2026

.KEY MESSAGES...

- High pressure will bring historically warm weather for March by
  the middle of the upcoming week, with temperatures approaching
  30F above seasonal normals continuing into the first part of the
  upcoming weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Winds have weakened in the post frontal environment
across most of the area, although gusty winds 20-30 mph will
remain across portions of Castle Country and the western Uinta
Basin (primarily during the day). Temperatures are dramatically
colder than the past several days with most locations expected to
get near to below freezing, aside from lower Washington county and
lower elevations portions of Zion.

Temperatures will quickly rebound over the next several as a
prominent ridge begins to build across the west. In fact, the
heights underneath this ridge will approach 595 dm which could
rival the most anomalous heights seen not only in March, but for
any month from November to March. We are talking about shattering
all-time record highs for the month of March as we get to the end
of the week and into the weekend. Just for context, our highest
forecast temperature this week for St. George is 97 degrees on
Thursday AND Friday. This would beat the previous March record
high temperature by 6 degrees (previous record being 91). In fact,
St. George will be in the 90s for at least 5 days (Wednesday-
Sunday). St. George has only ever gotten into the 90s twice in
March dating back to 1893. As for KSLC, temperatures are forecast
to be in the 80s Friday and Saturday which would break the record
for earliest 80 on record (previous being 3/31) and warmest
temperature recorded for the month if we get to 81+.

Cooler air starts to slowly creep into the CWA by Sunday as the
jet stream to our north starts to sag further south and flatten
the ridge. There is still little in the way of moisture until at
least the middle of next week. So until then it will be dry and
stable with record high temperatures.

&&

.AVIATION...KSLC...Variable flow will shift to a south to southeast
between 04-06Z. A mid-level deck around 7000 feet will build into
the area after 06Z and remain through at least Monday morning.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Diurnal winds will settle
into the area...with mainly terrain driven winds through the day
Monday.

&&

.SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
UT...None.
WY...None.
