Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
Issued by National Weather Service Hanford CA
128 PM PDT Mon Sep 25 2023
.SYNOPSIS...
High temperatures in the mid to high 70s are expected today across
the Northern California interior. These temperatures are below
normal for this time of year and will warm slightly before cooling
down over the weekend. A chance of rain is in the forecast for the
central to northern portion of the forecast area north of I-80
tonight into tomorrow, along with gusty winds. After tomorrow, the
weather looks to be calmer over the next few days, before the
weekend sees chances for isolated showers and elevated winds.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
A trough is slowly moving into the Northern California interior,
bringing with it evening rain and strong southerly winds. The rain
band associated with the system has moved onshore and begun
bringing rain to coastal California areas. Model ensemble guidance
shows the rain band associated with the trough beginning to impact
the forecast area north of the I-80 by tonight. This rain will
continue through late tomorrow morning. The northern portion of
the forecast area will see the highest impacts, with Redding
forecast to see up to half an inch of rain. Chico and the
surrounding areas look to see less rain, up to a tenth of an inch,
with Northern Sierra foothills forecast to see up to a quarter
inch of rain. Strong southerly winds are possible and have
matching spatial and temporal coverage with the rain, with wind
gusts up to 35 miles an hour possible.
Due to lingering impacts of this trough, tomorrow morning will see
residual rain and cloudiness through late morning before clearing
out by the afternoon. Winds in the morning will gust to lower
values than tonight, around 25 miles an hour, before lowering
further to light and breezy values of 5-10 mph. After this trough
moves out of the area, weather looks to be calm and dry for the
next few days. An attempt at ridge building will result in
temperatures warming tomorrow through Friday, with temperatures
peaking on Thursday. On Thursday, temperatures for most of the
Northern California valley will be in the mid to high 80s. By
Saturday, temperatures will have cooled back down to below normal
for this time of year.

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Friday THROUGH Monday)...
Model differences continue with the track of a large upper low at
the end of the week as it digs into the Great Basin over the
weekend. This leads to uncertainty with the amount of associated
precip over the CWA. NBM limits precip mainly to the Sierra Nevada
over the weekend with amounts around 0.10 to 0.25 inch, although
there are slight chances (about 15-20%) for light rain in valley
portions, including 0.01 inch in Sacramento to 0.10 inch or more
at Chico and Redding for Saturday. Forecast afternoon highs are
lowest on Saturday, with highs around 10 to 15 degrees below
seasonal averages, or lower to mid 70’s in the valley locations.
Latest probabilistic data show about a 35 to 50 percent chance of
high temperatures of 75 degrees or lower in these particular
areas. On Saturday and Sunday, the potential exists for some
locally gusty winds (generally around 30 to 35 mph), though a low
probability (less than 20 percent) at this time, Areas that could
see gusty winds redeveloping would be the Sierra Nevada, as well
as some downsloping northerly winds into the northern Sacramento
Valley. Models diverge even more on Monday in terms of the
synoptic pattern, but various solutions continue to show dry
weather. Below normal high temperatures expected through the
extended forecast period, although a minor warming trend begins on
Sunday.
