.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 622 PM CDT Thu Aug 14 2025
- Dangerous heat indices Friday into the weekend
- Mainly dry, then low rain chances Sunday into next week
&&
.NEAR TERM...
(Rest of today and tonight)
Issued at 1230 PM CDT Thu Aug 14 2025
Upper ridge continues to build east across the southern Plains this
afternoon, which has lead to a very warm afternoon. Still outside
chance to see an isolated shower/storm across far southeast
Oklahoma. If any precip does develop, it will be diurnally driven
and will dissipate with the loss of daytime heating. A few locations
across southeast Oklahoma will make a run at 105 degree heat index,
but should be limited in area and time.
Uncomfortably high dewpoints across much of the area will keep
temperatures warm overnight with lows in the mid 70s across a
majority of the area.
&&
.SHORT TERM...
(Friday through Saturday night)
Issued at 1230 PM CDT Thu Aug 14 2025
Center of the upper ridge will be nearly overhead, making Friday the
hottest day of the week. These temperatures along with dewpoints
remaining in the upper 60s and low/mid 70s across the eastern two-
thirds of the area will result in afternoon heat indices in excess
of 105 degrees. Will go ahead with Heat Advisory for portions of
Oklahoma for Friday afternoon. May need to expand this farther west
later if dewpoints do not mix out as much as anticipated. Much like
Thursday, there is an outside chance of an isolated shower/storm
across southeast Oklahoma Friday afternoon.
By Saturday, center of upper ridge transitions further east over the
mid-Mississippi river valley with warmest boundary layer airmass
shifting further north. This should keep temperatures from rising
any higher and some locations may be a degree or two cooler than
what is seen Friday. Sufficient moisture remains in place that
perhaps portions of north central and southeast Oklahoma reach
advisory level heat indices again.
&&
.LONG TERM...
(Sunday through Wednesday)
Issued at 1231 AM CDT Thu Aug 14 2025
Currently, there is an area of low pressure near the Yucatan
Peninsula that the National Hurricane Center is monitoring. Although
tropical formation is unlikely, a few models track this weak
disturbance through parts of southern Texas Saturday and into
northern Texas on Sunday. This along with the flow around the upper
ridge may result in slightly better chances of a few afternoon
showers and storms around Sunday. By Tuesday of next week, a
shortwave trough is expected to move across parts of the northern
and central Plains and into mid Mississippi Valley. As this
occurs, the center of the upper ridge will retrograde to the
central Rockies. This pattern change may allow a weak front to
move through parts of Oklahoma, bringing a chance of rain and not
as hot temperatures.

.AVIATION...
(00Z TAFS)
Issued at 622 PM CDT Thu Aug 14 2025
VFR conditions are expected to prevail at all TAF sites through
the period. South-southeasterly light winds will turn more
southerly through the morning tomorrow with light breezes through
the afternoon.
