Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
708 PM EDT Sun May 25 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure gradually builds in from the north and west through
Monday. Low pressure tracks into the Ohio Valley while another low
tracks well to our south Tuesday and Wednesday. A cold front may
then approach from the west later Thursday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
7PM...Low pressure both at the surface and aloft remained
centered over the Canadian Maritimes while expansive high
pressure was centered near Lake Superior extending southeast
towards Lake Erie. This set up as has resulted in continuing
cool and somewhat breezy conditions due to the gradient over us
between the low and the high. The development of cu earlier
today has lead to some isolated to scattered showers and
sprinkles, mainly along the I-78 corridor and points north. We
can expect these showers and sprinkles to diminish through the
evening.

As we head into tonight, any showers in the north quickly
diminish after sunset however there will be a system sliding by
to our south and this will bring some mid and high level
cloudiness into Delmarva and far southern NJ. However it doesn`t
look like any precip from this system will affect our area so
we`ve removed the mention of showers in the forecast. Otherwise
it will be another cool night with lows mainly in the 40s to
low 50s.

For Monday, any remaining clouds associated with the system to
our south clear out early in the day as high pressure builds in.
This will leave us with a mostly sunny Memorial Day with highs
in the low 70s for most, except 60s along the ocean front and in
the Poconos. Winds on Monday will be notably lighter than recent
days and so for the first time in several days, there is a good
chance of a sea breeze.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Fair weather remain over the area from Monday night into Tuesday
with an increase in clouds later Tue afternoon. An upper ridge
and surface high pressure move offshore Tue night. Temperatures
will continue a few degrees below normal, but overall dry and
pleasant.

Moisture arrives overnight Tue into Wed as onshore flow sets-up.
Skies will become overcast overnight and will remain cloudy Wednesday.
Rains, associated with an approaching warm front arrive from SW
to NE during Wednesday. Pops will be in the categorical range S/W
and likely for N/E areas. Could see 1/2 to 3/4 inch of rain for Delmarva
and 1/4 inch N/E. Amounts will likely change as the event nears. A
few tstms are also possible across Delmarva later Wed. Below normal
temps are expected Wed with the lack of sunshine keeping things cool.
Highs will mostly be in the 60s.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Unsettled conditions from Wednesday continue into the long term
as an upper trough and low across the upper Great Lakes and
Midwest areas slides east. Eventually, the system moves offshore
allowing drier air to return for the last half of next weekend.

The greatest pops for the long term will be across the region
Wed night with likely numbers in the grids and for this period,
there is a chance for tstms too. These higher pops will be the
result of milder air arriving ahead of a surface low and front
over the Great Lakes. Once this rotates by, lesser pops will be
in the fcst for Thu/Fri. After that, the upper trough moves east
and another front arrives for Saturday. We`ll continue with the
chance pops (50% N/W and 25%-30% SE) for the frontal passage
Sat afternoon.

Temperatures will be within a few degrees of normal thru the
period. Daytime highs at the end of May are typically in the
mid/upper 70s for the southern half of the CWA while upper
60s/low 70s prevail for N/W counties. Lows usually fall into the
50s.

&&

.AVIATION /00Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Tonight...VFR with mainly mid and high clouds. Winds diminishing
and may become light/variable overnight. High confidence

Monday...VFR with northerly winds around 5 knots. High confidence.

Outlook...

Monday night/Tuesday... VFR expected.

Tue night thru Wed night... Periods of sub-VFR expected. Occasional
  showers and a few tstms expected.

Thu/Fri...Mostly VFR but scattered showers expected with lower
  conditions possible.

&&

.MARINE...
Winds and seas will remain below SCA levels thru Monday. West
to Northwest winds around 10 knots with some gusts around 20 kts
this afternoon. Winds may shift southeasterly by Monday
afternoon, but generally 10 kts or less. Waves generally 2-3
feet.

Outlook...

Monday night/Tuesday... sub-SCA with Fair weather.

Tue night... Winds and seas build with SCA conditions developing
  across the DE and southern NJ waters by dawn. Chance of rain
  late.

Wed thru Thu... SCA expected. Showers and scattered tstms.

Friday... sub-SCA with widely scattered showers.

Rip Currents...

For Memorial Day, north winds around 10 mph in the morning,
becoming east-southeast in the afternoon. Breaking waves of 1-2
feet with periods of 8-10 seconds. This results in a LOW risk
for the development of dangerous rip currents for all beaches.

For Tuesday, east-southeast winds around 5-10 mph, breaking
waves of 1-2 feet with periods of 7-9 seconds. This results in a
LOW risk for the development of dangerous rip currents for all
beaches.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
With the new moon on Monday, astronomical high tides in many places
will be within one half foot of minor flooding.

Surface flow becomes weaker on Monday while beginning to have a
more onshore component for the Atlantic Coastline. Therefore,
minor tidal flooding is possible with the higher of the high
tides on both Monday and Tuesday afternoon/evening for the New
Jersey and Delaware coast, Delaware Bay, and Tidal Delaware
River. It is still uncertain if we will experience widespread
minor flooding, so have continued to hold off on any coastal
flood advisories at this time.

For the Chesapeake Bay, no tidal flooding is expected.
