.KEY MESSAGES...

* Regional showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon,
posing a risk of strong gusts, small hail, and lightning.

* Summer-like heat continues through midweek before cooler
  temperatures arrive late this week.

* Increasing winds likely elevate fire concerns each afternoon
from Tuesday onward, and impact travel and recreation.

.DISCUSSION...

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are probable yet again this
afternoon with best chances (20-40%) shifting northward from the
Tahoe Basin and Greater Reno-Carson-Minden area into Lassen County
and N Washoe County. Thunderstorm activity will likely shift
eastward into W NV Basin and Range by the evening before dissipating
around 10 PM or 11 PM PDT. Strong outflows up to 50 mph will
continue to be the primary hazard with blowing dust possibility
impacting Basin and Range communities and roadways (e.g., Interstate
80). Storms will also be capable of small hail, brief downpours, and
lightning.

Summer-like heat will continue through midweek as daytime highs
remain in the 80s and 90s until Wednesday. Dry southwest flow will
overspread the region after today as high pressure translates
eastward, which will effectively suppress afternoon thunderstorm
activity and provide steady cooling from midweek onward. Gusty
afternoon winds return Tuesday into the weekend amid increasing
flow aloft and periodic trough passages. Blended guidance offers
at least a 60-80% chance of gusts exceeding 30 mph each afternoon
from Tuesday onward. Winds are favored to peak Friday or Saturday,
likely owing to deeper troughing along the West Coast as
advertised in latest ensembles. Be prepared for travel and
recreation impacts this week, including bumpy flights, gusty
crosswinds and blowing dust, and hazardous boating conditions due
to choppy lake waters.

These increased breezes will overlap seasonably dry conditions to
promote a multi-hour period of elevated to critical fire weather
conditions each afternoon from the Sierra Front into the W NV Basin
and Range. Overnight recoveries will also be very poor across
western Nevada from mid- to late week as RH struggles to exceed 30-
40%. While thunderstorm chances remain low after today, holdover
fires from our recent lightning may flare up in response to
strengthening winds.

.AVIATION...

Regional thunderstorms are expected yet again this afternoon, but
the area of greatest likelihood shifts northward from Tahoe to the
Oregon border. This lends a 15-30% chance of thunderstorms within 10
miles of KRNO-MCXP-KMEV and KTVL-KTRK during the 20-02Z. Lesser odds
of 10-15% exist at KMMH. Expect strong gusts and sudden wind shifts,
brief downpours/MVFR conditions, and lightning near thunderstorms.
