Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
1254 AM PDT Wed Jul 16 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Typical afternoon breezes will produce areas of elevated to
locally critical fire weather conditions into the weekend.

* Isolated showers and thunderstorms remain possible each
  afternoon through midweek.

* Seasonably hot and dry weather into the weekend with periods of
  haze from nearby wildfires.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

A low pressure currently situated over Montana will progress
eastward today, but will still provide elevated afternoon breezes.
Combined with the dry conditions, a handful of hours of localized
to critical fire weather conditions will be possible, primarily
for W NV Basin and Range. That low will also continue to bring
hazy conditions as fires continue in N CA and S OR.

While our dog days of summer aren`t totally over, our weekend
heatwave has passed! Afternoon highs will hover around near-to-
above normal through the end of this week. That means highs in the
mid 80s and mid 90s for Sierra communities and valley locations,
respectively. Looking towards the end of July, the Climate
Prediction Center indicates near normal temperatures.

With afternoon heating, chances (10-20%) for showers and
thunderstorms continue, but will be primarily localized to Mono,
Mineral, and S Lyon counties each afternoon through the week. As a
tropical disturbance off the coast of Baja California progresses
northward, a surge of moisture can be expected toward the end of
this week. This increases areal coverage for showers and
thunderstorms. However, they will still be confined to the
southern part of our forecast area (Mono, Mineral, and S Lyon
counties).

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions prevail today with typical afternoon breezes and
gusts of 20-30 kts, primarily for Sierra front terminals. For the
aforementioned terminals, as well as those in western NV, density
altitude concerns will continue due to hot afternoon
temperatures.

Smokey and hazy conditions are expected to continue, as well,
possibly degrading slantwise visibilities at Sierra Front and
western NV terminals. Afternoon shower and thunderstorm chances
continue each day this week, primarily impacting KMMH with
possible gusty outflows and brief, heavy rainfall.
