Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
1225 AM PST Sun Dec 22 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Active weather throughout the forecast, with multiple
upper waves triggering precipitation chances. Precipitation
focuses on northern Nevada today and Monday, while a much
stronger system brings widespread rain and snow across the area
for Christmas Eve and Christmas. Precipitation chances will
continue through the end of the week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Monday Night

Unsettled weather to close out the weekend. Upper level forcing in
advance of an upper trough will lead to precipitation chances of
up to 80% across all except the southernmost part of the forecast
area today, although individual showers will remain scattered.
Things get quiet for a few hours this afternoon and evening
before the trough itself passes to the north and kicks off a
second round of showers into Monday morning. Precipitation from
this round of showers remains further to the north, with the
highest POPs (up to 80%) remaining north of I-80 and the southern
half of the forecast area expected to remain almost entirely dry
(POPs <15%). Precipitation looks to end by Monday morning as a
brief ridging pattern sets up. Precipitation totals during this
time remain low, due to a combination of dry air and unseasonably
warm temperatures. Snow levels remain above 7000 feet, resulting
in less than an inch of snow at mountain passes and up to two
inches on mountain peaks. QPF totals will be a tenth of an inch or
less in the valleys and the highest elevations receiving up to
half an inch. Temperatures both days remain well above average but
only Eureka is expected to approach record temperatures.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Monday

A brief ridging pattern will result in warm and dry conditions
for Tuesday, with lows in the 30s and highs in the 50s. An upper-
level shortwave trough will move quickly through our area from
Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, bringing rain showers and
potentially a trace of snow in the valleys. QPF totals between
0.10 - 0.20 are forecast for the valleys, and 1-2 inches of snow
is possible for mountain passes and road summits. Up to 5 inches
of snow is possible for the mountains. Afternoon highs on
Wednesday will cool to the upper 30s, and lows will be in the 20s.

From midmorning Christmas Day to midmorning Boxing Day (12/26),
it looks like there will be another brief break from snow before
a strong upper-level trough in the Pacific Northwest moves onshore
and begins influencing our weather in Nevada until Sunday. From
midmorning Thursday until midnight Friday, QPF values between
0.10-0.20 and a trace of snow is possible for valleys, with 0.5
inches of snow for mountain passes. Morning lows in the lower 20s
will help increase our chances of seeing snow on Thursday and
Friday. Afternoon highs in the lower 40s will allow for some melting to
occur during the day on both days, but minor impacts are still
possible, especially for elevated roadways and bridges. Up to 3
inches of snow is forecast for the mountains. Beyond that point
until Sunday, up to 0.5 inches of total snow accumulation is
possible for valleys, and up to 2 inches for mountain passes. The
Ruby mountains and Jarbidge could see up to 10 inches of
additional snow accumulation during this period.

Warmer temperatures are expected over the weekend, with highs in
the upper 40s and lows in the 30s. As a result, snow is expected
to change completely into rain in the valleys, but up to 1 inch is
still possible for higher elevation roadways, and up to 3 inches
is forecast for the mountains. A ridge will begin to build on
Sunday and will remain in place on Monday, resulting in dry
weather both days. Monday morning lows will drop to the 20s due to
a dry northwesterly flow on the back side of the low exiting our
area.

&&

.AVIATION...CIGS will gradually lower overnight into Sunday as a
weak trough moves through the region. Rain showers and areas of
mist beginning early Sunday morning for northern terminals (KWMC,
KBAM, KEKO) will create temporary MVFR and IFR conditions for the
majority of the day on Sunday as the trough pushes through. CIGS
will remain at or below 3000FT for northern terminals through
Sunday evening. KTPH and KELY will also see low CIGS Sunday with
precipitation occurring mainly Sunday afternoon.
