.DISCUSSION...
(Today through next Thursday)
Issued at 200 AM PDT Thu Jun 19 2025
WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW: Transition to stronger southwesterly
flow today as the ridge axis progresses east. Concurrently, a deep
upper closed low migrates south along the coast of the PacNW.
Increased gradient will produce southwesterly breezes this
afternoon with gusts 30 to 40 mph across most of the forecast
area. Temperatures will remain warm with additional daily high
temperature records possible. Daytime highs will reside in the
upper 80s to upper 90s. Overnight lows will be in the low 40s to
low 50s with winds also easing overnight. Surface cold front
associated with the will continue to encroach upon the forecast
area from the northwest Friday with winds again increasing during
the day, becoming slightly stronger than Thursday. Gusts as high
as 45 mph are expected. Under this set up, widespread elevated to
critical fire condtions will be in place both today and Friday
due to strong winds and low afternoon relative humidity. Increased
probability for rain showers by Friday night in conjunction with
the frontal passage, though the lack of available atmospheric
moisture means that any showers will be limited in areal coverage
to along and north of the I-80 corridor. Any accumulations will
also be less than 0.10 inch. Winds shift northwesterly post
frontal thru Friday night and will be breezy Saturday with gusts
25 to 35 mph, though temperatures will be much cooler with daytime
highs ranging from the mid 50s near the Oregon and Idaho borders,
to the mid 70s for far southern portions of the forecast area.
Fairer weather Sunday with cooler temperates and much lighter
winds as the closed upper low dissipates into a trof over the
western U.S. Conditions remain generally fair thru mid week though
temperatures will begin a warming trend Monday. Daytime high
temperatures in the 90s look to be common place by Thursday.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS: High temperature forecast
confidence regarding near record heat for this afternoon is high
along with confidence in elevated to critical fire weather
conditions Thursday and Friday. Increasing forecast confidence
regarding much cooler temperatures and fairer weather by Sunday.

.AVIATION...
(12Z TAFS)
VFR conditions expected at all sites through the next 24 hours.
Strong winds gusting 30-40KT expected to begin at all sites
between 16-21Z and continuing through at least 06Z on the 20th.
KTPH remains AMD NOT SKED due to communications issues with the
ASOS.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Low pressure system off the west coast and associated surface cold
front encroaching upon the Great Basin will produce elevated
southwesterly surface winds today. Increased wind speeds along
with minimum afternoon RH values near 15% or less have prompted
the issuance of a Red Flag Warning for portions of the forecast
area. By 11:00 AM winds in zones 425/426/427/469 and 470 will
increase to sustained speeds of 25-30 mph with gusts forecast in
a range of 35-40 mph. Winds in zones 424/437/438 will increase as
well though not quite to RFW criteria (20-25 mph). With RH values
in the 4-13% range and fuels approaching or at critical levels,
elevated fire weather conditions will be a concern for zones
424/437/438. RFW continues Friday, expanding to include all zones.
Though winds will subside tonight before again increasing Friday
afternoon, becoming slightly stronger than Thursday with gusts as
high as 45 mph. Precipitation chances also increase Friday night
as the front moves thru the state from the northwest, and any showers
will be situated along and north of the I-80 corridor. Though
wetting rains are not anticipated. Winds will also shift
northwesterly Friday night post frontal. Cooler and fairer weather
will be in place by early next week.
