.DISCUSSION...
KEY MESSAGES:
- Areas of fog, occasionally dense, occuring near the North Dakota
border this morning.
- Scattered mix of rain and snow is expected through most of the
week.
- A dry and warm weather pattern will develop by later this
weekend.
WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:
A complex upper trough will linger over the western states through
much of the week. Multiple shortwave impulses transverse the
Rockies through the trough. The most-organized of these impulses
will track from Wyoming into the upper Midwest today. Fog over
North Dakota has pushed west into Montana this morning and
precipitation is expected to mainly across southern Montana.
The next main larger low pressure wave is expected from the
northwest as a weak Alberta type clipper. This will bring another
round of precipitation for Thursday morning into Friday, but the
models look like they have a better handle with this better
organized wave. With colder air moving in from the north behind
this system, any mixed precipitation will change over to snow on
Thursday evening. Snow accumulations will be generally less than
two inches, and could be even less due to the somewhat warmer
ground and the potential for rain at times.
Beginning on Saturday afternoon, the flow pattern changes to bring
in a warmer high pressure ridge from the west. This should
provide much drier and warmer conditions for later this weekend
and into the beginning of next week.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:
Confidence is average to below average for precip chances today
but higher precip chances and and precip amounts for Thursday
morning through Friday morning.
