.DISCUSSION...
KEY MESSAGES:
- Haze and smoke from Canadian wildfire will ebb and flow through
the region off and on. The next big wave of likely unhealthy
smoke will arrive early Tuesday morning behind a cold front.
- A weather pattern change next week will result in more favorable
conditions for organized thunderstorms, beginning on Tuesday
evening.
WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:
Sunny, yet hazy skies prevail across our region as the deep low
pressure system over Manitoba continues to move eastward. The far
western extent of that large low pressure system has kept low
clouds and rainfall over North Dakota, but this far west, only a
few low-level clouds remain over the far NE corner of Montana.
The associated pressure gradient is still tight enough to sustain
gusty and strong winds through NE Montana. Despite the recent
(weak) green-up, fire weather conditions are elevated. See the
Fire Weather Discussion below. A Lake Wind Advisory also is in
effect today. All concerning wind speeds will diminish later this
evening, bringing an end to our headline warnings and advisories.
By Monday, the flow pattern aloft become more zonal (from the
west) and will allow warmer and drier weather to persist, although
without the recent gusty winds. Therefore, fire weather concerns
will ease. Hottest day will be Monday, with high temperatures near
90 degrees.
Tuesday evening and beyond, region-wide conditions set up for
organized summertime thunderstorms, with higher humidity from the
south/southeast and troughing/SW flow moving in from the PAC NW.
Models are hinting at strong thunderstorms from our SW on
Wednesday evening.
FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:
Confidence is high for elevated fire weather conditions again
today. Confidence is increasing for organized thunderstorm
activity beginning around the middle of next week.
Used a blend of hi-res short term consensus models for wind and
pops now through Day 2. All other grids used the NBM.

.AVIATION...
LAST UPDATE: 0400Z
FLIGHT CAT RANGE: VFR - MVFR
DISCUSSION: HAZE and SMOKE from Canadian wildfires could drop
visibility to MVFR briefly late Monday afternoon. Otherwise, sunny
and hazy skies prevail for the TAF sites through the cycle.
WIND: NW and becoming light this evening. Backing to the W and
increasing to 5 to 15 kts late Monday morning through the
afternoon. Then backign to the south in the evening ahead of a
front.
BEYOND THE CYCLE: Early Tuesday morning through Tuesday afternoon
SMOKE will likely reach MVFR and possibley IFR conditions behind
an arriving cold front.
