.DISCUSSION...

`Tis the Day before Christmas and the atmosphere was stirring.
We have a large trough sliding across California today bringing
rain and snow to the area. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect
from 7 AM to 7 PM tonight as there is a 30 to 65 percent chance
of 8 inches or more of snow above 6,000 feet in the Sierra
Nevada and a 50 percent chance of 12 inches or more of snow
above 8,500 feet. In the San Joaquin Valley, we are looking at a
25 to 60 percent chance of half inch or more of rain. Higher
values are possible as there is a 40 to 70 percent probability
of CAPE values of at least 100 J/kg in the Valley. The risk of
thunderstorms has also led to a Flash Flood Watch for the Sierra
Nevada foothills from 8 AM to 4 PM today especially for the burn
scars and the higher precipitation amount in thunderstorms could
lead to debris flows.

This storm also brings stronger winds to Eastern Kern County.
There is a High Wind Warning for the Mojave SLopes and a Wind
Advisory for the rest of the Mojave Desert in Kern County from
1 PM today to 19 AM Wednesday. There is a 40 to 85 percent
chance of a wind gust of 60 mph or greater for the Mojave Slopes
and a 20 percent chance and higher of wind gusts of at least 45
mph for the entire eastern Kern County. These probabilities are
due to strong favorable winds due to the positioning of the
winds in the trough as it slides across California.

Ensembles bring a ridge on Wednesday to the area leading to the
return of a chance of fog for the Valley. However, the ensembles
show a trough sliding across northern California on Thursday
through Friday bringing the next chances of rain and snow.
Another ridge moves in Saturday bringing in another chance of
fog in the morning. The ensembles are picking up a third trough
sliding across Northern California on Sunday through Monday.
However, the ensembles diverge on the trough`s timing and
strength on Monday into Tuesday. The latest CPC 6-10 and 8-14
day outlooks have a 33 to 50 percent chance of below average
precipitation for the San Joaquin Valley. The 6 to 10 day
outlook has a 50 to 60 percent chance of above average
temperatures while the 8 to 14 day outlook has a 33 to 40
percent chance of above average temperatures.

.AVIATION...
12Z Update

when MVFR conditions pop up with occasional IFR conditions from
15Z to 3Z due to the rain as it moves through. Thunderstorms are

conditions are expected to return after 3Z. The Sierra Nevada
will see MVFR to IFR conditions due to snow and clouds after 15Z
through around 6Z or so before returning to VFR. Eastern Kern
County can expect VFR conditions for the next 24 hours with
spots of MVFR to IFR in showers between 18Z and 6Z.
