Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
200 PM PST Wed Jan 1 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
Fair and warmer weather will prevail today and Thursday under a
ridge of high pressure and weak offshore flow. Areas of coastal
low clouds and dense fog will occur again tonight and early Thursday
morning but be a little less extensive than last night. Onshore
flow will develop Friday and Saturday, with cooler weather and
more clouds. High pressure and offshore flow will return next week
to bring the next warming trend, and Santa Ana winds will occur
around Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

Skies were mostly sunny across the region except for patchy
lingering low clouds and fog at the coast. Temperatures made it to
70 or above in most of the valleys, except some coastal valleys of
San Diego County, and most of the lower deserts.

The high pressure ridge building in from the south/southeast will
peak here Thursday before shifting east to the Rockies Friday, while
a trough of low pressure will be moving through the Pac NW/Northern
California Friday. After easterly winds, locally gusting around or
slightly above 30 MPH through/west of passes/canyons, through
Thursday, the winds will switch to the west and bring cooling. The
marine layer should deepen for awhile Friday and especially Saturday
when the trough axis moves through our area for more widespread low
clouds, with fog likely shifting from coastal areas to the valleys.
Ensemble guidance suggests some runs, generally around 15 percent,
showing light but measurable precipitation, as well as some MOS
guidance. Like with some of the other recent troughs going by mostly
to the north, any precipitation that falls will be light. For now, I
will leave it out of the forecast, but if chances increase any, then
we will add a bit of light rain to the forecast, mainly around
Saturday.

After the trough moves east to the Rockies, a ridge will build off
the West Coast, but models vary quite a bit with what happens
farther east over the Western US. Around Tuesday, a shortwave could
dig south over the interior West, with cluster analysis of
ENS/GEFS/GEPS showing about a 15 percent chance of a cutoff low
moving southwest into SoCal, while other solutions have the ridge
moving into California, though with varying degrees of troughing
back towards at least Arizona. We have around an 80 percent chance
of a Santa Ana wind with gusts at least 40 MPH in parts of our area,
but timing is uncertain, even if that shortwave/cutoff gets strong
in the Southwest, as well as wind speeds. With the mean ensemble
MSLP being around 16 MB higher in northern Nevada than SoCal, there
is a high likelihood of low humidity due to offshore flow, but
again the winds are questionable though potentially strong.

.AVIATION...
012145Z...Coast/Valleys...Localized areas of low clouds and fog are
present along beaches this afternoon, with some hazy/misty
conditions with VIS 3-6 SM slightly further inland along the coast.
These clouds will continue to scatter out through late this
afternoon. Patchy low clouds and fog will redevelop late this
evening offshore, approaching the coast 06-09Z Thu. There is some
uncertainty regarding how far inland clouds will reach tonight as
well as how long they will persist. The chances of CIGs at KSAN,
KCRQ, and KSNA are 25-40%, 10-20%, and 50-60% respectively. Clouds
that do move into the coast will be based at 100-400 MSL and bring
visibilities 0-2 SM, with areas of dense fog with visibility under
1/2 SM. Any clouds that come ashore will clear 15-17Z Thu.

Mountains/Deserts...FEW-SCT clouds at/above 25,000 ft MSL and
unrestricted VIS through Thursday afternoon.

&&

.MARINE...
Patchy dense fog with visibilities of 1 SM or less possible tonight
into Thursday morning. Otherwise, no hazardous marine conditions
expected through Sunday.

&&

.SKYWARN...
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are
encouraged to report significant weather conditions.

&&

.SGX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
CA...None.

PZ...None.
