Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco CA
114 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
...New SYNOPSIS, SHORT TERM, LONG TERM...
.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 113 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
Near normal temperatures to start the work week. Warming trend to
begin on Tuesday with above normal temperatures anticipated by
Friday and the upcoming weekend.
&&
.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Monday)
Issued at 113 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
A weak upper level trough is forecast to move across the region
tonight into Monday. This will reinforce the northwest flow across
the region and help deepen the marine layer to around 2,500 feet
in depth. Thus, expect low clouds to return tonight and into early
Monday morning across a majority of the region with the exception
of the higher peaks. There is also the potential for coastal
drizzle early Monday morning, especially across the San Francisco
Peninsula/San Mateo coastline.
In wake of the exiting trough, temperatures for Monday afternoon
are expected to be in the upper 50s to lower 60s on the
west/northwest facing coastline (lower 70s in places such as Santa
Cruz). Just inland from the coast, temperatures look to warm into
the mid 60s to mid 70s with the warmest interior spots reaching
into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees F. Breezy west/northwest
winds are expected again on Monday with gusts up to 45 mph in the
favored gaps, passes, and higher terrain.
&&
.LONG TERM...
(Monday night through next Saturday)
Issued at 113 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
There is high confidence for a highly amplified ridge to build
over the northern two-thirds of the West Coast late this week and
into the upcoming weekend. Meanwhile, a cut-off low is forecast to
move toward southern California and Baja California during the
same timeframe. The track of this cut-off low will have little
impact on weather conditions across our region. Thus, expecting
Moderate HeatRisk by Friday across the interior as temperatures
warm to 10-15 degrees above normal. Near the coast, temperature
are a bit more tricky as they may need to be warmed up a bit for
late week. Currently, a shallow marine layer is forecast to be in
place which should keep temperatures relatively cooler. Be sure to
check back for the latest forecast updates.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1124 AM PDT Sun May 25 2025
CIGs are eroding, leading to widespread VFR this afternoon as
moderate to gusty winds build. These winds last into the evening
before reducing. As winds reduce, low clouds move fill along the
coast and move farther inland, eventually becoming widespread
overnight. CIGs look to be spotty at APC and SJC, with some mist
affecting STS into early Monday. CIGs begin to erode again into
late Monday morning with most areas going VFR later into that
afternoon.
Vicinity of SFO...Expect VFR to last into the late night. Breezy to
gusty west winds are building and look to become strong by the mid
afternoon with gusts peaking around 34 kts. These winds become
reduce into the night and gusts cut off in the late night as IFR
CIGs fill over the terminal. Breezy west winds build into late
Monday morning as CIGs erode.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...CIGs are retreating as more moderate to
breezy winds build for the afternoon. Low clouds look to return
quickly into the evening as winds reduce and fill at the terminals
after nightfall. These CIGs look to last into Monday afternoon.
&&
.MARINE...
(Today through Friday)
Issued at 1124 AM PDT Sun May 25 2025
Winds have reduced across most of the waters, but will still be
locally stronger along the immediate coastal areas thanks to a
coastal jet. Additionally, stronger winds will be possible inside
San Francisco Bay Sunday afternoon and evening. Winds build again
into Monday, leading to widespread Small Craft Advisories for
gusty winds followed by elevated seas. Expect hazardous marine
conditions begin to ease in the mid-week.
