AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
405 AM PDT Sat Apr 12 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
Dry conditions are expected today as an area of low pressure moves
east of the region. Northerly winds will be gusty along the coast
and on ridgelines today. Lighter winds are expected on Sunday
along with a warning trend into the first part of the work week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
A trough currently moving through Northwest California triggered a
few showers along the Trinity County northern and eastern borders
overnight. These showers have since moved east, leaving dry
conditions across the forecast area. Cloud cover this morning will
quickly dissipate leaving mostly clear skies today as ridging begins
to build into the region behind the departing trough. Temperatures
will gradually warm the next several days with highs into the mid
60s along the coast and mid 80s for some interior valley locations
by Monday. Though these temperatures will be warm, they will be well
short of the records for this time of year, especially across the
interior.

The next weather maker will be for later in the week when a trough
may dive south from western Canada and combine with a cut-off low
off the Southern California coast. The cluster analysis shows a
nearly 70% potential of this occurring or at the least (the other
30% of solutions) the cut-off low remaining anchored over
southern California. Depending on how moisture flows into these
two features, showers and thunderstorms could become a concern
over the higher terrain. Determining the location of these
potential storms is not yet possible but an addition of
thunderstorm chances over the interior mountains of Northwest
California for later this week is certainly a possibility in
future forecast updates. /RPA

.AVIATION...
A mix of VFR and MVFR ceilings prevail along the coastal
terminals overnight. Meanwhile, some patchy fogs developed across
the vicinity of KUKI. Low clouds and fog will start to clear out
with the increasing northerly winds and drier air advection this
morning. Followed by prevailing VFR conditions with clear skies for
all aerodromes through Sunday. However, a period of visibility
reduction with haze will be possible at KCEC and KACV in the
afternoon due to the sea spray as the winds over the waters
increase. Breezy northerly winds around 10-15kts, with gusts up 25kt
early this morning along the coastal terminals, especially at KCEC.
After 16Z, winds are expected to increase to around 15-25 kts with
stronger gusts around 25-33kts along the coast as the surface
pressure gradient tightens, with the strongest winds at KCEC.
Northerlies are expected to gradually diminish after 13/01Z, but
will remain breezy at CEC. Meanwhile, generally light N winds around
5-10 kts will prevail at UKI throughout the day, with some
occasional stronger gusts.

&&

.MARINE...
Gale force northerly winds and steep to very steep, hazardous
seas are expected to impact the coastal waters this weekend. As of
3AM, buoy observations indicated strong to near gale sustained
north winds and wind waves up to 10 feet. Marine conditions are
expected to continue to deteriorate as the pressure gradient
tightens. Winds will continue to strengthen throughout the day
today, with gust up to 45 kts...especially across the outer water
and northern inner waters, only slightly sheltered in the southern
inner waters. Steep and hazardous seas generated from these
strong winds will propagate into the inner waters, producing 13 to
15 foot wave heights through Sunday morning. Winds will gradually
diminish Sunday afternoon as the coastal jet moves further
offshore and weakens. Seas in the outer waters will likely remain
within advisory criteria through Monday morning even as winds
diminish.
