Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
Issued by National Weather Service Sacramento CA
1038 AM PDT Thu May 29 2025
.KEY MESSAGES...
* Heat peaks Friday into Saturday with widespread 90s to near 100
degrees in western Nevada and 80s in Sierra valleys.
* Southwest winds increase late Saturday into Sunday, bringing
fire weather, travel, and recreation impacts.
* Isolated to scattered thunderstorms return Saturday through
Tuesday, especially near the Sierra and into western Nevada.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
Formidable high pressure will remain in place through Saturday,
bringing a hot and dry spell across the Sierra and western Nevada.
High temperatures in Western Nevada will be in the 90s, with some
locations approaching 100 degrees. Sierra valleys will warm into
the 80s to near 90 degrees. At Reno, there is a 70% chance of
tying or breaking the record high of 98 degrees Saturday. Who
flipped the temperature calendar to July?!
Hot temperatures this early in the season will be of particular
concern and result in widespread moderate HeatRisk, especially
in urban areas and those working or recreating outdoors. Reduce
your risk to heat illness: hydrate, use sun protection, and limit
peak heat exposure. Keep in mind that swift, cold waterways will
remain hazardous due to ongoing snow melt runoff, and are not a
safe option for cooling off. Overnight lows will remain unusually
warm Friday and Saturday, especially in western Nevada where
temperatures will stay in the 60s and even near 70s in some Basin
and Range locations.
We will start to see the pattern shift on Sunday as high pressure
crumples under the influence of an area of low pressure dropping
into the region. A noticeable cool down arrives with temperatures
dropping 10-20 degrees by early next week. Along with this pattern
shift comes an uptick in southwest winds late Saturday into
Sunday. Wind gusts 30 to 40 mph will result in impacts to
recreation and bring fire concerns as well.
Moisture and instability also increases during this weather shift,
with isolated thunderstorms possible Saturday, spreading across
the region Monday and Tuesday. Any storms that kick off on
Saturday may be drier in nature, resulting in a higher fire risk
with any lightning. Showery and cool weather is expected to linger
on through much of next week.
&&
.AVIATION...
VFR conditions and widespread hot temperatures continue through
Saturday. With the hot temperatures, high density altitude
remains a concern through the week. Southwest winds increase
Sunday into Monday with gusts up to 25-30 kts, especially near the
Sierra and across western Nevada terminals. Precipitation
potential returns late Sunday with more widespread chances for
rain and storms Monday into Tuesday.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...
* Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Saturday through Sunday
for gusty winds, low humidity and isolated lightning *
Hot and dry conditions persist through Saturday with relative
humidity in the teens to single digits. Poor overnight humidity
recoveries continue for mid-slope and valley locations. Winds
increase Sunday, with ensembles showing gusts 30-35 mph. These
winds, combined with dry fuels, will bring periods of elevated to
near-critical fire weather conditions, especially for western
Nevada on Sunday. The uptick in winds may reveal any holdover
fires from lightning earlier this week. Isolated thunderstorms
may develop Saturday initially dry, with increasing storm coverage
potential Monday into Tuesday.
