Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
1229 PM PST Wed Jan 1 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak system brings isolated light showers today. Another system
approaches late week bringing widespread precipitation, mountain
snow showers, and isolated thunderstorms Thursday night through
Friday. Drier and warmer weather will follow over the weekend and
into next week with periods of gusty north to east winds.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
The NWS Sacramento forecast area is starting off 2025 with mostly
cloudy skies and some isolated light showers as seen on latest
RADAR scans and satellite imagery, spreading inland from
northwest to southeast across interior northern California on this
New Year`s afternoon. Observed precipitation has been fairly
minimal, with around a few hundredths to a tenth of an inch
picked up in scattered rain gauges over the past 12 hours, locally
up to a quarter inch in the northern mountains of Shasta County.
Light shower chances will continue through this evening, mainly
over the mountains, and the northern Sacramento Valley/adjacent
foothills as this weak trough passes by over the Pacific
Northwest.

As we move into Thursday, high resolution model reflectivity does
indicate that isolated light showers continue mainly over the
mountains north of Interstate 80 on Thursday. Precipitation
amounts are generally around a tenth of an inch or less on
Thursday. Elsewhere, dry conditions continue, with patchy fog in
the Valley in the morning. Forecast highs will trending a few
degrees warmer than today, in the mid 50s to mid 60s in the Valley
and foothills, and in the 40s to 50s in the mountains.

Another system will begin to approach the region late Thursday,
bringing widespread precipitation, mountain snow showers, and
isolated thunderstorm chances through the day on Friday. Latest
rain and snow forecast amounts have trended higher mainly in the
higher elevations since the previous forecast. The most recent
guidance from WPC has storm total rain amounts of 0.10 to 1 inch
in the Valley with 0.50 to 2 inches in the foothills and
mountains. The National Blend of Models (NBM) currently shows
around a 10% probability of thunderstorms in the Valley and
foothills on Friday afternoon. The NBM also suggests a 35 to 65
percent probability of snow amounts of 4 inches or greater in the
mountains above 6000 feet on Friday. Snow levels are initially
high, around 7000 to 8000 feet early Friday morning, lowering to
around 5500 to 6500 feet by Friday afternoon. Motorists should
plan ahead for slick road conditions and increased travel times
during the Friday commute.

On Saturday, a few lingering mountain showers will be possible,
but overall drier weather returns to the area as the trough
shifts eastward and ridging starts to build back into the region.
Dry weather and warmer temperatures will continue into the
extended forecast period. Be sure to stay up to date with the
latest forecast at weather.gov/sto and road conditions at
quickmap.dot.ca.gov as we move forward into the New Year! /KH

&&

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Sunday THROUGH Wednesday)...
Ensemble guidance and cluster analysis indicate upper level
ridging to be the dominant synoptic feature over the extended
forecast period. Dry weather is expected later in the weekend, and
continues into next week. High temperatures will be near to
slightly above the early January climatological normal, with
Valley temperatures in the mid 50s rising to the mid 60s by the
middle of next week as the ridge builds over the Eastern Pacific.
Periods of gusty north to east winds are also favored over this
timeframe, with the National Blend of Models (NBM) suggesting a 35
to 65 percent probability of wind gusts of 30 mph or greater
along and west of Interstate 5, and in the mountain/foothill gaps
and canyons from Monday through Wednesday. /KH

&&

.AVIATION...
MVFR conditions with locally IFR conditions are expected from
showers and cloud ceilings mainly over foothills and mountains
north of I-80. MVFR/IFR conditions from fog are forecast for the
Northern San Joaquin Valley by 12Z Thursday. Otherwise generally
VFR conditions for the next 24 hours. Surface winds are mainly at
or below 12 knots.

&&

.STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
None.
