Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
319 AM PST Fri Feb 14 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
A winter storm will continue to bring moderate to heavy rain and
snow and gusty winds today, mainly for the mountains and foothills.
Dry weather returns Saturday and then a weak system brings light
precipitation chances over higher terrain and the northern
Sacramento Valley Sunday through Monday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
IR Satellite imagery shows strong upper level trough moving
through the region. The current (3 AM) radar shows mainly
mountain and foothill showers continuing, with a few scattered
showers in the Valley south of I-80 and over the northern
Sacramento Valley. Caltrans webcams show periods of heavy snow
showers over the Sierra, with chain controls currently in effect
for many mountain highways, including I-80 and Hwy 50. For current
road conditions go to Quickmap.dot.ca.gov. Snow profilers show
snow levels around 4900 feet at Shasta Dam and at Oroville, while
levels are around 5000-5500 feet for the Sierra. Snow levels are
expected to gradually drop to around 4000 to 4500 feet as cool air
behind the trough moves in. Light snow is currently being
reported at Blue Canyon (5280 feet). Heaviest snow is expected
this morning, with NBM probabilities of an inch or more an hour
around 85 to 95% for the Sierra above 5000 feet. This will bring
periods of poor visibility and make driving very difficult.
Additional accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are possible in the
Sierra and southern Cascades through this evening, up to 16 inches
over higher peaks, with most of that snowfall in the morning
hours. For the northern Coastal Range, the mountains of Shasta
County and the Burney Basin the storm is winding down, with just
an additional inch or two of snow possible early this morning over
the mountains.

Rainfall in the Valley and Delta is expected to be mainly in the
morning, with scattered showers and generally light rainfall
amounts, with some sun breaking out later in the morning and
afternoon. Moderate to heavy rain is expected to be focused in the
mountains and foothills. Most lingering precipitation is forecast
along the Sierra by midday today, and generally dry weather
region wide by evening. Gusty southerly winds in the Valley and
Delta continue early this morning, but have already peaked. Some
gusts to around 20 to 25 mph are possible through midday, then
decrease further in the afternoon.

Upper level ridging will bring a return to dry weather on
Saturday, though with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Morning lows
on Saturday will be quite cool, in the mid to upper 30s for the
Valley and Delta, near freezing around Redding. Patchy morning
frost is possible. For people doing recreating in the higher
mountains, expect morning lows in the teens.

A weak shortwave moving through the Pacific Northwest Sunday into
early Monday and will likely result in a brief period of high
elevation rain/snow showers north of Interstate 80, but
probabilities of precipitation greater than 0.25 inches through
Monday morning only sit around 25 to 45 percent at this time, even
for the wettest areas, the northern mountains and northern
Sacramento Valley. Elsewhere, dry and occasionally breezy weather
is anticipated through the weekend, with near seasonable
temperatures.

&&

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Tuesday THROUGH Friday)...
Ensemble guidance continues to trend toward large scale ridging
by Tuesday. Clusters continue to show a shortwave moving through
the ridge bringing a period of showers by the middle of the week,
though. The NBM projects light precipitation, mainly over the
mountains north of I-80, and over the northern Sacramento Valley.
Probabilities of precipitation greater than 0.25 inches through
Thursday morning are between 25 to 45 percent, so any impacts are
expected to be limited. Late week should be dry across the area.
Seasonable temperatures are expected to persist alongside
periodically breezy northerly winds. High temperatures in the
upper 50s to mid 60s are anticipated through the Delta, Valley,
and foothills, with 40s to 50s at higher elevations. Additionally,
low temperatures in the low to mid 40s for the Delta, Valley, and
foothills, with 20s to low 30s at higher elevations.

&&

.AVIATION...
Primarily VFR conditions across interior NorCal as weather
gradually clears out of the area. Some lingering showers could
cause MVFR/IFR conditions, particularly in the mountains, through
06z Saturday. Gusty southerly winds expected in the Valley, Delta,
and foothills with gusts 25 to 35 kts until around 12z today.
Gusty southwest winds expected in the Sierra, with gusts 40 to 60
kts until 18z Friday. Winds decrease through the day today,
returning to widespread sustained speeds below 12 kts after 00z
Saturday.
