AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
456 AM PDT Wed Apr 9 2025

.SYNOPSIS...A frontal system will bring a chance of rain and breezy
southerly winds to Del Norte and northern Humboldt Counties on
Thursday. Otherwise, dry and warmer weather is expected today
through Thursday. Blustery northerly winds and cooler temperatures
are expected for Friday and Saturday, followed by gusty offshore
flow and interior warming Sunday and Monday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Warmer interior high temperatures are expected today
as a broad upper ridge pumps up over the area. 850mb temperatures
hit 10-12C which supports interior high temps in the mid to upper
70`s for our generally warmer valleys in SE Mendo and SRN Lake.
Stratus has been lurking well offshore and not advancing toward
the coast at the moment. Stratus and fog offshore may touch the
shoreline this afternoon. Southerlies in advance of a frontal
system on Thu should result in some warming for the North Coast
if the stratus erodes. Otherwise, ridge axis shifts northeastward
on Thu and 850mb temps decrease a couple of degrees. Thus expect
interior temps to hold steady or diminish on Thu.

Frontal boundary will intersect the coastal terrain north of Cape
Mendo on Thu and provide some light rain. Highest chance for a
tenth or more in 6 hours is in Del Norte County. Otherwise, not
much rain is expected, but it could get wet in the afternoon on
Thu. Outdoor projects and activities will be impacted.

Prime impacts heading into Friday and Saturday will be strengthening
northwesterly and northerly winds after 500mb trough passage. Deep
mixing with the trough overhead should allow for downward momentum
transport and gusty or windy conditions for coastal areas. ECMWF
EFI is picking up on this already. Looking at the distribution
from the EC ensemble, gusts to 40 mph are possible for the
coastal headlands. Windy locations in the King Range and local
acceleration expansion fans around Cape Mendo may yield localized
wind gusts to 50 mph Fri night into Sat. Eventually surface high
pressure builds into the NRN Great Basin on Sunday as a thermal
trough forms over the North Coast. This will probably result in
gusty NE and E winds over the ridges and wind-prone channeled
terrain. Also high temps in the interior should rebound Sun and
Mon, but overnight lows will remain chilly with a possibility for
frost and freezing tempertures in colder interior valleys.

Uncertainty grows with the evolution of a splitting trough early
next week. Gusty NE-E winds and low humidity will probably persist
into Monday. A cut-off low may spin some moisture our way for
interior showers. The cut-off may stay too far offshore and it
will remain dry and mild. Beyond Mon, upstream shortwaves may
break through and bring some light rain to the northern portion of
the area on Tue/Wed. Overall it is not looking like a very wet
and active weather pattern with generally seasonable temperatures
and low chances for precipitation. DB

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions have been prevailing at all terminals
through the night. Satellite imagery did show low clouds and
perhaps patches of fog in the narrow interior valleys underneath
the translucent high cirrus. BUFKIT soundings continue to indicate
light east winds (<5mph) and shallow humidity over coastal
aerodromes this morning. Thus, low impact mist or shallow ground
fog may form by daybreak around KCEC and KACV. High resolution
models indicate light onshore winds developing this afternoon.
HREF has 10-20% chance for more impactful stratus with cigs below
1000 feet and 10% chance for <1/2SM in fog rolling in off the
ocean this afternoon. Probabilities for low cigs and vsbys generally
increase this evening and overnight, however southerlies in advance
of another front will pull the stratus northward and offshore
with greatest potential for impactful stratus at CEC. DB

&&

.MARINE...A long period NW swell will continue to decay through
Thursday. Another shortwave will arrive late Thursday into Friday,
enhancing southerly winds in the northern waters - currently, gusts
look to remain near or below advisory levels. Persistent northerlies
and steep wind waves 10 to 12 feet are forecast to dominate the sea
state this weekend as a tightening pressure gradient develops along
the coast.
