Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
103 PM PDT Sat Sep 7 2024

.Synopsis...
Not as hot this weekend, then cooler next week. Potential for
mountain and foothill showers mid-week and breezy northerly winds
mid to late week.

&&

.Discussion...
Current GOES-West visible satellite imagery shows mostly sunny
skies with a few mid to high level clouds passing over interior
northern California on this Saturday afternoon. A few cumulus
clouds are developing over the Sierra Crest south of Highway 50 as
well. For most locations, current temperature observations are
trending approximately 2 to 6 degrees cooler than this time
yesterday afternoon, valid at 1 PM PDT.

Minor cooling is expected over the weekend and into early next
week as high pressure weakens slightly over the area. Temperatures
will still be trending above normal for early to mid September
climatology. Forecast highs are expected to generally be in the
upper 80s to around 100 in the Delta, Valley, and lower
foothills, with 70s to low 90s in the upper foothills and
mountains. Mainly Minor to Moderate HeatRisk is expected across
much of interior NorCal over the short-term. On Tuesday, more
cooling will be possible as a trough approaches from the north,
along with increased onshore flow and higher relative humidity.
The National Blend of Models (NBM) suggests a 55 to 95 percent
probability of high temperatures less than 90 degrees on Tuesday,
except in the northern Sacramento Valley where it is only 15 to 30
percent.

Periods of locally breezy onshore winds are forecast over the
next several days, mainly in the afternoon and evening hours where
gusts of 10 to 20 mph will be possible. Dry conditions continue
over the weekend with low relative humidity, which may lead to
locally elevated fire weather conditions through Monday.

&&

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Wednesday THROUGH Saturday)...
Cluster analysis continue to point to a trough dropping in from
the Pacific NW and creating an "inside slider" weather forecast
pattern. There is still uncertainty about how the depth and
strength of the trough and the associated winds with this system`s
passage. Moisture associated with this is minimal so not much in
the way of precipitation is expected. NBM probabilities only show
a 15-25% chance of measurable precipitation but limited to mainly
Shasta County, Coastal Range, and Northern Sierra and only up to
an quarter of an inch.

Temperatures cool to the upper 80s to low 90s in the Valley
during the back half of next week with some drying in the Valley
as periods of north winds develop on Thursday into Saturday
morning. Thursday has a 25-45% chance of gusts stronger than 30
MPH, highest along I-5 north of Sacramento. NBM is projecting RH
values to remain high enough to mitigate any concerns for critical
fire weather conditions at this moment, but areas of the Northern
Sacramento Valley may see elevated fire weather conditions at
times.

&&

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions over interior NorCal next 24 hrs. Local Sly sfc
wind to 15 kts in Sac Vly with local gusts to 20 kts btwn 21z-04z,
otherwise wind mainly below 12 kts in Central Vly. Vcnty of
Delta, SWly sfc wind up to 17 kts with lcl gusts to 25 kts aft 21z
