Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
822 AM PDT Sat Apr 12 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Temperatures cool off through the weekend, but will
remain well above average through midweek. Gusty southwest winds
increase this afternoon and with breezy northwest winds Sunday
afternoon, with minimal impacts expected. Breezy afternoons continue
through the week under mostly sunny skies.
&&
.UPDATE...Shortwave trough moving into the Pacific Northwest will
continue to push the ridge that brought the record warmth to the
area east. Although temperatures today will drop about 4 to 6
degrees, we are still looking for one more near record high in Las
Vegas before fall even more Sunday. With the shortwave trough, we
will see gusty south to southwest winds today with most areas seeing
wind gusts 20 to 30 mph with a few locations across western San
Bernardino and southern Inyo counties seeing wind gusts between 30
to 40 mph. No need to any wind headlines as these higher wind gusts
will be fairly isolated. Current forecast in good shape and no
updates needed.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Today and Sunday.
The ridge over the Desert Southwest will continue to deamplify as a
shortwave trough pushes into the Pacific Northwest. Temperatures
will drop 4 to 6 degrees today compared to yesterday and will drop
another 4 to 6 degrees on Sunday. Despite these temperature drops,
afternoon highs will remain well-above average, with "Minor" Heat
Risk across the region.
In addition to deamplifying the ridge, the aforementioned
shortwave`s associated trough axis will move an 85 kt 250mb jet
overhead, which will increase southwesterly wind gusts across the
forecast area this afternoon. Gust speeds will generally range
between 20 and 30 mph, but 30 to 40 mph can be expected in the
higher terrain. Additionally, the far southern portion of the Owens
Valley could experience 35 to 40 mph gusts over Highway 395 due to
downsloping off the Sierra Nevada as well as far western portions of
Highway 215 in the Las Vegas Valley due to downsloping off the
Spring Mountains. These gusts are expected to be occasional, rather
than prevailing, so no wind-related headlines are necessary.
After the cold front moves through the region Saturday evening, post-
frontal breezy northwesterly winds pick up across the southwestern
Great Basin and spread southward into the Mojave Desert through the
day on Sunday. Speeds will generally range between 15 and 25 mph,
with higher gusts in the higher terrain.
.LONG TERM...Monday through Next Weekend.
On Monday, the upper level ridge will back-build and try to re-
establish itself over the region, over-topping a cutoff low
sitting over the Southern California coast as it does so. Once
this sets up, it will sit in this Rex Block-type pattern for much
of the week, which will result in low-impact weather.
Temperatures will remain near-steady Monday through at least
Thursday, which will be about 8-10 degrees above-normal for this
time of the year. Even if weak forcing is able to sneak into the
region, PWATs will remain below-normal through midweek and no
precipitation is expected. Breezy south to southwest winds may
develop at times, especially in San Bernardino and Inyo counties,
which will be closest to the offshore low and stronger pressure
gradient, but probabilities for impactful wind gusts over 40 MPH
are low.
Models suggest a change to the Rex Block pattern and lift the
Southern California low through the region Friday into next weekend.
There is a wide range of scenarios on how and when this will
occur, though. SPC`s Cluster Analysis would favor a slower and
weaker solution with the strong ridge hanging on into the first
part of the weekend and the low slowly weakening before it ever
reaches the local area, but all cluster groups do at some point
bring the low across the region. Low confidence in temperature,
wind, and precipitation forecasts after Thursday due to this
uncertainty. It can be said with some confidence that high impact
precipitation is not expected if this system moves through the
region as PWATs and forcing remain modest on most ensemble
members.
