AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...Dry weather with a warming trend is forecast today
through Thursday, with light showers and breezy winds possible in
Del Norte Thursday morning. Cooler weather, blustery northerly
winds and a chance for showers and high mountain snow are forecast
for Friday through Sunday.

.DISCUSSION...Scattered showers have mostly stayed north of Del
Norte County early this afternoon as a weak shortwave pushes a
decaying front into the north coast. Minimal accumulations so far
amounting to a few tenths of an inch, mostly north of Crescent
City beneath decreasing cloud cover. HREF QPF probabilities
struggle to run greater than 30% chance of 0.10 inches by late
this evening. Gusts 15 to 30 mph across Humboldt and Del Norte
will gradually diminish this evening behind the front.

Broad ridging will build Wednesday, bringing warmer temperatures and
clearing skies to the area, especially interior valleys. NBM
probabilities are aligning with new hi-res guidance with about 60 to
80% for temperatures >75 degrees within interior valleys (a slight
increase), including Ukiah, Covelo, Hayfork and Weaverville. Other
valleys and surrounding foothills are very likely to break 70
degrees as well. Models are favoring Thursday as the slightly warmer
day overall, with southerly flow pushing coastal temperatures into
the low 60`s. With high pressure over the eastern Pacific, a strong
marine layer is likely to form beneath light NNW flow, slightly
dampening the high temperature forecast for coastal areas,
particularly on Thursday.

Another weak shortwave will sweep to our northwest Thursday
morning/afternoon, trailing another weak frontal boundary into the
north coast from a stronger surface low off the SW Canadian coast.
Similarly minor impacts will likely prevail with <0.25 inches of
precip falling over 24 hours and breezy southwesterlies. NBM wind
gust probabilities drop off steeply above 25 mph Thursday afternoon
for Crescent City. Long range models are coming into better
agreement on a cold upper trough descending into the PNW beginning
Friday, increasing in amplitude and potentially sheering off into a
cutoff low off the SoCal coast this weekend. Meanwhile, a strong
pressure gradient will develop between the cold upper airmass and
a strong warm high centered over the desert SW, ramping up
northerly winds along the NorCal coast and offshore. Cool and
breezy conditions will prevail for most of the CWA through early
next week, with daily diurnal surges of winds. Mendocino and Lake
will likely remain more temperate compared to northern counties.

.AVIATION...VFR conditions prevailed at all forecast terminals
today with mid and high clouds trekking across the area in a high
zonal flow. Earlier this morning however, a weak decaying weather
system was accompanied by some MVFR Cigs in the vicinity of CEC;
associated rain remained just north of the CEC airport. The system
also generated breezy-gusty SSE-SSW winds, particularly over Del
Norte County. Did add mainly directional LLWS to CEC`s Taf from
late morning until early afternoon; impact was meager as surface
winds increase during late morning. Early morning Satellite
Imagery showed lower clouds forming in all interior valleys
overnight, with UKI briefly dropping into IFR from 7-8 am. There
is some uncertainty amongst model guidances, but previous
discussion said "Lighter winds and increasing boundary layer
humidity will increase the chance for stratus and IFR ceilings at
KCEC (80% chance) and KACV (50% chance) tonight according to the
high resolutions ensemble". Briefly added lower Cig/Vis conditions
for Wednesday morning on 18z TAf for consistency. /TA

.MARINE...Moderate to strong breezes will diminish this afternoon
following a weak frontal passage, allowing wave heights to fall
below advisory levels this evening. The sea state will significantly
diminish mid-week beneath building high pressure and light NW
breezes as a long period NW swell continues to decay. Another
shortwave will arrive late Thursday into Friday, enhancing southerly
winds in the northern waters - currently, gusts look to remain near
or below advisory levels. Persistent northerlies and steep wind
waves 10 to 12 feet are forecast to dominate the sea state this
weekend as a tightening pressure gradient develops along the
coast. NBM already has high probabilities for gale force gusts 35
to 40 knots, especially in the outer waters and downwind of Cape
Mendocino.
