.KEY MESSAGES...

*  Dry conditions and increasing winds will bring periods of
   elevated to critical fire weather conditions for the next few
   days. Longer periods of gusty winds are possible Friday and
   Saturday.

*  Temperatures cool slightly but remain above average through
   early next week.

*  Temperatures may climb again by mid-late next week, with
   typical afternoon breezes.

.DISCUSSION...

The overall pattern has shifted to a drier and slightly cooler
regime, with a trough over the Pacific Northwest producing
increased afternoon SW-W winds across eastern CA-western NV each
day through Saturday. These winds will likely kick up a little
more and occur for a longer duration on Friday and possibly
Saturday, as a weather system with more upper level jet support
brushes across the northwest US. Increased fire weather concerns
will be present--for more details, see the Fire Weather section
below.

From Sunday through early next week, the ensemble guidance
indicates some form of weakening for the northwest US trough,
resulting in a decrease in wind speeds. More typical zephyr-type
breezes are anticipated--gusts mainly 20-30 mph for shorter
periods in the mid-late afternoon each day.

Although not quite as warm compared to recent days, temperatures
will remain above average for the upcoming week, with highs mainly
in the upper 80s-lower 90s for lower elevations and mid 70s-near
80 for Sierra communities. The blended guidance is hinting at an
upward trend for daytime highs by the middle of next week, although
some of the ensemble clusters are less aggressive in this potential
warmup, keeping a flatter upper level ridge across CA-NV. MJD

.AVIATION...

*  Winds will be the main aviation impact, with SW-W wind gusts
   near 25 kt for far western NV terminals southward to KMMH, and
   near 20 kt for KTVL/KTRK mainly between 20-03Z today and
   Thursday. For Friday and Saturday, these winds could start to
   mix down about 2-3 hours earlier in the day and linger 1-2
   hours later into the evening, with gusts 25-30 kt and possibly
   near 35 kt for the far western NV terminals. Periods of
   mountain wave turbulence and occasional LLWS are anticipated
   for the next few days.

*  Widespread VFR conditions prevail for the next few days with
   little to no cloud cover over the main terminals through much
   of Friday, followed by a mix of flat PM cumulus and bands of
   cirrus through this weekend. MJD

.FIRE WEATHER...

A Fire Weather Watch was issued for most of western NV and
portions of northeast CA, covering the potential for enhanced
wind gusts of 35-40 mph starting around midday and continuing into
the evening for both Friday and Saturday. Humidity values will be
quite low, especially in west central NV where afternoon minimums
will be in the single digits, with poor overnight recoveries to
less than 35%.

While we aren`t including today and Thursday in the watch, we
included a mention of elevated to locally critical fire weather
conditions with shorter periods of gusty winds, and potential for
some flare-ups of holdover ignitions from lightning in recent
days. After yesterday`s fire activity around the Reno-Sparks metro
area, heightened awareness is advised on a daily basis as more
vegetation continues to dry out. MJD
