Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
128 PM PDT Fri May 23 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Cooling will continue into the weekend as a troughing pattern sets
up across the region. This will bring in low clouds to the coast
and western valleys each night and morning. Gusty winds will also
be felt across the mountains and deserts today into Saturday.
Temperatures and cloud cover will stay quite consistent into next
week with lesser confidence on warmer temperatures by the end of
next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
Clouds have cleared nicely for most areas along the coast this
afternoon with hazier skies inland. Clouds will come back into the
area this evening through the morning with a similar depth, where
the patchy fog will again be mainly confined to inland valleys
and foothills. A troughing pattern will begin by Saturday into
early next week. This will bring temperatures down another 5 to 10
degrees from today by Saturday. This has also led to an increase
in winds across the mountains and deserts. Winds remain elevated
through this evening with widespread gusts 25-40 MPH. NBM chances
are moderate to high in seeing wind speeds over 35 MPH across
these areas. Windiest conditions will remain in the San Gorgonio
Pass with winds up to 60 MPH through Saturday evening. The trough
may be deep enough to produce marine layer drizzle or light rain
on early Sunday morning closer to the coast. Some models do depict
measurable precipitation, but one or two hundredths at best.
Another trough passing by across the Pacific Northwest early next
week will maintain our weather pattern, keeping a trough around
the area. This will bring minimal day to day changes to the
weather pattern with high temperatures near to slightly below
normal. There is more uncertainty to the temperature forecast by
later next week as a ridge is expected to build across the western
U.S. while an area of low pressure may form closer to our area. We
will continue to watch which system will have greater influence
over our region, hence a larger spread in model guidance. This
forecast shows temperatures within 10 degrees of normal. Whatever
occurs, quiet weather remains likely as we round out the month of
May and head into June.

.AVIATION...
232030Z...Coasts/Valleys...Clouds have cleared nicely this afternoon
to a few miles offshore. These clouds will push back ashore this
evening most likely after 01-02z but could begin push in as early as
22z this afternoon. Bases will be slightly higher than this morning,
closer to 1500-2000ft MSL with coverage expected across the entire
coastal basin through the coastal mountain slopes by 09-12z. VIS
obscurations limited to where clouds intersect higher terrain.
Clearing back to the beaches by 18z Saturday.
Elsewhere...Clear skies and VFR conditions prevail. Strong west
winds over mountains, passes and desert slopes with gusts locally to
35-50kts expected this afternoon/evening. Mod up/downdrafts in lee
of mountains with patchy BLDU possible, locally reducing VIS down to
3SM at times. Winds slowly weaken some Saturday morning but pick
back up Saturday afternoon with similar strength gusts as today.
&&
.MARINE...

waves of 5-7 feet, subsiding Saturday morning. Otherwise, no
hazardous marine conditions are expected through Wednesday.
