Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Medford OR
340 AM PDT Thu Apr 10 2025

.DISCUSSION...Low pressure near 48N and 132W will move just to
the NW of the northern tip of Vancouver Island today and
eventually onshore into western British Columbia tonight. This
will send a cold front toward the PacNW coast. Precipitation will
develop over the coastal waters later this morning, then move
onshore this afternoon. Most inland areas will have a dry, warm
day in advance of this front with high temps generally 5-15F
above normal, but nearing 20F above normal for some locations east
of the Cascades. We are forecasting highs in the low to mid 70s
for most west side valleys, but also for many east side populated
areas. South to southwest breezes will increase in many areas late
this morning through this afternoon, but should be sub- advisory
levels. Overall, expect peak gusts of 25-35 mph, strongest over
the East Side this afternoon. As mentioned earlier, the front will
bring some light rain to the coast this afternoon/evening with
amounts of 0.10-0.25 of an inch (coast range mountains could pick
up a little more than that due to some orographic enhancement),
but nothing too drastic. Same goes for the Cascades from Crater
Lake northward and the Cascade Foothills/Umpqua NF. Support for
the front will shift to the north tonight and it will mostly fall
apart as it moves east of the Cascades. Precipitation is unlikely
here in the Rogue Valley, though we can`t completely rule out a
few drips this evening as it moves through.

Friday into Saturday, an upper trough will swing across the area,
so it will be cooler by about 5-10F Friday. Another 5-10F of
cooling can be expected south and east of the Cascades on
Saturday, with less cooling then for west side valleys. Moisture
is lacking with the upper trough, but a disturbance crossing the
area could bring a few showers, especially from the Cascades east.
Model instability is fairly weak, but there is a small chance
(~15%) of thunder over the far east side Friday afternoon/early
evening. Things dry out west of the Cascades Friday night and
it`ll get chilly in some west side valleys by sunrise Saturday
with patchy frost. Still looks a little too warm for frost here in
Medford. However, high pressure will build in Saturday night into
Sunday morning, providing good radiational cooling. This will
likely be the coldest night/morning of the period, with some
frost/freezing conditions expected in the west side valleys.
Backyard gardeners or those with agricultural interest should
prepare for those conditions.

After that, a big warm up is expected Sunday afternoon into early
next week. Temperatures look make a run at 80F again here in
Medford on Monday. -Spilde

.AVIATION...10/12Z TAFs...VFR conditions prevail this morning.
MVFR and IFR ceilings/fog are present at some coastal locations,
in the coastal valleys and also into some west side valleys this
morning. A front will approach and rain will move onshore this
afternoon with continued MVFR and area of IFR expected along the
coast and into the coastal mountains. Rain will spread into
portions of Douglas County later this afternoon with local MVFR
and mountain obscurations. Otherwise, expect continued VFR
elsewhere. Breezy to gusty afternoon winds are expected this
afternoon. -Spilde

&&

.MARINE...Updated 230 AM Thursday, April 10th...Below advisory seas
remain in area waters early this morning. An approaching front will
bring gusty southerly winds this morning and through the afternoon,
building steep seas for all area waters. Wind speeds north of Cape
Blanco will be higher than winds to the south. A coastal jet is
expected to form north of Cape Blanco and within 30 nm from shore
late in the morning through early afternoon. Wind gusts north of
Cape Blanco, and especially in the coastal jet, could reach 35-40
kts. Seas in the coastal jet may be very steep and hazardous.

Winds ease through the evening, with steep seas continuing through
the night. Conditions improve early on Friday morning. A weak
thermal trough is forecast to build later in the morning, bringing
elevated northerly winds. With seas still somewhat unsettled from
the front, steep seas will rebuild south of Cape Blanco through the
afternoon. Steep to very steep and hazardous seas are likely to
continue through the weekend as the thermal trough remains in place,
but confidence is lacking in the area and timing for Friday evening
and through the weekend. Conditions could improve for area
waters early next week. -TAD
