Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
200 PM PDT Wed May 21 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Not much change for the deserts for temperatures tomorrow, while
cooling for the coast and valleys on Thursday spreads inland
through Friday and Saturday. With the cooling, Saturday high
temperatures will be within a few degrees of average. A few to
around 5 degrees warmer on Sunday, then gradually cooler through
Wednesday of next week. There will be stronger and gusty southwest
to west winds during the afternoon and evening for the mountains
and deserts for Thursday and Friday. Fog will be locally dense
near the coast this morning with night and morning coastal low
clouds and fog spreading into portions of the inland valleys by
the weekend as the marine layer deepens.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
Tonight through Friday...
Clouds will regather by later this evening and overnight clouds will
become mostly cloudy to overcast for most of the coastal areas and
around 5 to 10 miles inland, especially for San Diego County. There
could be some patchy areas of fog and this could be locally dense
at times, right along the coastal areas and possibly a few patchy
areas over some of the nearshore waters, although likely not
widespread enough to warrant the issuance of a Special Marine
Warning.
Winds look to increase for the mountains and high deserts by
later in the afternoon and through the evening tomorrow. Strongest
winds look to be through Banning Pass, with gusts possibly over
50 mph at times going into late evening tomorrow. At this time,
there is still not enough in the way of widespread winds reach
criteria to warrant the issuance of a Wind Advisory, although
after decoupling a bit overnight tomorrow and into Friday morning,
they will increase again by later in the afternoon.
Low clouds are going to regather and fill back in during the evening
hours, and some of the inland areas will see patchy fog as well.
These clouds should begin to lift slightly and thicken by Friday
morning ahead of the next approaching trough. There will be a slight
chance of drizzle by Friday evening going into Saturday morning.
Friday through the weekend...
Models have remained continue to break down after today and lead to
temperatures becoming cooler and closer to the seasonal average by
this weekend. Saturday is looking to be the coolest day for the next
week, then it will be slightly warmer on Sunday as some weak ridging
transitions over the region. The ridge is going to begin to break
down and troughing upstream over the northwest region will continue
to advance towards the region and allow for the increase of the
marine layer and slightly cooler temperatures as a result, closer to
the average, and this slight cooling trend will continue over the
weekend. Low clouds will continue to stick around for most of the
coastal areas and portions of the inland valleys, especially on
Saturday. By the early part of next week, a weak upper level low
could move down the over California and reinforce a some cooler
temperatures with a slight chance of precipitation.
