Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA

.SYNOPSIS...
Fair and cool weather will continue through the weekend, with a
deeper marine layer sending coastal clouds and fog into inland
valleys each night and morning. High pressure over the Southwest
will strengthen next week, which will bring warmer weather, and
diminish the marine layer and coastal cloudiness.

&&

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

Just as we anticipated: little or no clearing at the coast today.
The eddy is going strong and will continue as a low pressure
trough to our north continues for the next few days, keeping
temperatures below average and the marine layer happy and healthy
into early next week. Low clouds and fog will have no trouble
filling most of the inland valleys for the next two nights. The
cloud could thicken enough to produce patchy drizzle at the coast
as well. Enjoy the coolish mid-August weather this weekend;
temperatures will be several degrees below average for most areas.
High pressure over the Southwest will strengthen and expand
gradually next week. This will suppress the marine layer, probably
enough to disallow coastal clouds from entering inland valleys
each night and morning. The expanding high will also bring a
gradual warming trend, with some places getting temperatures above
average by Tuesday and most places by Wednesday. With the upper
high centered generally over the four corners, monsoon moisture
should increase around Tuesday. Or Wednesday, or maybe Thursday or
Friday. This idea of increasing monsoon moisture 5-7 days out has
been a common theme in the extended model guidance for many weeks
now, but precipitation has rarely materialized. Our chances for
precipitation remain too low to mention in the forecast for now.
There are some ensemble solutions indicating the high weakening
late next week for cooler weather again and a more extensive
marine layer, but of course the range of solutions is wide and
confidence is low on any one outcome. For now we`re forecasting
seasonably hot weather inland, a little above average, and less
extensive coastal clouds. We could also see some higher clouds and
feel a little more humidity Wednesday and beyond.

.AVIATION...
142000Z...Coast/Valleys...SCT-BKN low clouds 1200-1800 ft MSL are
lingering along much of the immediate coast this afternoon. Low
clouds will become more widespread and move inland 00-02z Fri with
bases near 1200-1800 ft MSL. Vis restrictions under 1 SM where low
clouds intersect terrain. Low clouds expected to fill in the coastal
basin, impacting KONT and KSBD. Patchy drizzle is possible along the
coast, mainly in San Diego County, Friday AM. Low clouds will
scatter out of the valleys 16-18Z and 17-19/20Z for coastal areas.
Partial and intermittent clearing expected along the immediate coast
Fri.

Mountains/Deserts...Mostly clear with VFR conditions. W-NW winds
gusting 30-40 kt on desert mountain slopes, below passes, and into
the deserts through 10Z Fri.

&&

.MARINE...
No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Wednesday.

&&

.BEACHES...
A 14-16 second southwesterly (200-220 degree) swell will bring
elevated surf and a high rip current risk to southwest facing
beaches. Surf will decrease to 2 to 4 feet on Friday. Strong rip
currents could continue into Friday for some beaches. Consult a
local lifeguard if you`re at the beach.

&&

.SKYWARN...
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are
encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
