Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
115 PM PDT Sat Apr 12 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Temperatures cool off through the weekend, but will
remain well above average through midweek. Gusty southwest winds
increase this afternoon and with breezy northwest winds Sunday
afternoon, with minimal impacts expected. Breezy afternoons continue
through the week under mostly sunny skies.
&&
.SHORT TERM...through Monday.
The ridge over the Desert Southwest will continue to deamplify this
afternoon as a shortwave trough pushes into the Pacific Northwest.
This has helped bring gusty southwest winds to much of the region
along with a continuation of well above normal temperatures,
although highs are generally about 4 to 6 degrees cooler than the
peak we saw on Friday. The region will remain under a southwest flow
through Sunday as the Pacific Northwest trough begins to cutoff and
slide southeast off the central California coast. This will have
little impacts overall except we will see temperatures drop a couple
of more degrees. Winds on Sunday will be lighter overall, but a weak
cold front will push south through the day bringing some gusty
northerly winds across Lincoln and Esmeralda counties. The front
will continue to push south into southern Nevada and northwest
Arizona Monday with some breezy northerly winds, but little change
in temperatures as readings will continue to remain several degrees
above normal early next week.
.LONG TERM...Tuesday through Next Weekend.
On Tuesday, the upper level ridge will back-build and try to re-
establish itself over the region, over-topping a cutoff low sitting
over the Southern California coast as it does so. Once this sets up,
it will sit in this Rex Block-type pattern for much of the week,
which will result in low-impact weather. Temperatures will remain
near-steady Tuesday through at least Thursday, which will be about 8-
10 degrees above-normal for this time of the year. Even if weak
forcing is able to sneak into the region, PWATs will remain below-
normal through midweek and no precipitation is expected. Breezy
south to southwest winds may develop at times, especially in San
Bernardino and Inyo counties, which will be closest to the offshore
low and stronger pressure gradient, but probabilities for impactful
wind gusts over 40 MPH are low.
Models suggest a change to the Rex Block pattern and lift the
Southern California low through the region Friday into next weekend.
There is a wide range of scenarios on how and when this will
occur, though. SPC`s Cluster Analysis would favor a slower and
weaker solution with the strong ridge hanging on into the first
part of the weekend and the low slowly weakening before it ever
reaches the local area, but all cluster groups do at some point
bring the low across the region. Low confidence in temperature,
wind, and precipitation forecasts after Thursday due to this
uncertainty. It can be said with some confidence that high impact
precipitation is not expected if this system moves through the
region as PWATs and forcing remain modest on most ensemble
members.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 18Z Forecast Package...South to
southwest winds gusting around 25 knots are expected through the
afternoon, with gusts ending around sunset. A weak front is expected
to bring a wind shift to northerly early Sunday morning, with winds
flopping over to northeast shortly after. Speeds are likely to
remain at or below 10 knots, although a few gusts cannot be ruled
out. No operationally significant clouds or weather expected.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 18Z Forecast Package...Southwesterly winds
gusting 15 to 30 knots in the deserts and 30 to 40 knots over
mountain ridges can be expected through this afternoon. A weak front
will turn winds northerly in the southern Great Basin late this
afternoon and in much of the Mojave Desert overnight into Sunday
morning before washing out. Wind speeds behind the front will be
weaker, with the strongest gusts of 20 to 30 knots limited to the
higher terrain of Esmeralda and Inyo counties, while southwest gusts
of 20 to 25 knots persist over Mohave County.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
