Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco CA
246 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

...New SYNOPSIS, SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, MARINE...

.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 246 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

Remarkably stable weather pattern this week with temperatures
generally near the seasonal average, marine layer clouds each night
and morning, and breezy onshore winds each afternoon and evening.

&&

.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Tuesday)
Issued at 246 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

The picture from space this afternoon is mesmerizing as stratus
flows over our waters and hugs the coast. You can also see some
stratus lingering in select interior areas such as Marin County,
around San Francisco and Oakland, and hugging interior northern
Monterey County. There may be some additional give in these areas or
along the immediate coast, but that will be short lived. Stratus is
expected to surge back inland tonight, similar to what we saw last
night. This means we could also see pockets of drizzle where the
marine later is thickest tomorrow morning. Otherwise the forecast is
more or less on repeat with temperatures being near normal to
slightly below normal.

&&

.LONG TERM...
(Tuesday night through next Sunday)
Issued at 246 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

Upper level ridging gets flattened on Wednesday as an upper level
shortwave trough quickly passes over southern OR and northern CA.
This will leave us with quasi-zonal flow through mid to late week,
with an upper level trough moving in for the weekend. The forecast
is generally going to be on repeat with cloudy nights and mornings,
breezy onshore flow during the afternoon and evenings, and near
seasonal temperatures.

&&

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1106 AM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

Visible satellite shows prolific marine stratus intrusion late this
morning. Generally high confidence in VFR clearing times in the TAFs
given very stable atmospheric pattern. MVFR/IFR returns this
afternoon/evening once again with generally high confidence in
timing.

Vicinity of SFO...Solid VFR clearing to the south of the terminal
and along the approach will continue into this afternoon. Marine
stratus returns this evening under a deep marine layer...high
confidence.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...Many coastal areas will be very slow to
clear today, if at all. TAF carrying MVFR/IFR cigs through the
period along coastal terminals (KMRY), and high confidence in return
into more inland terminals such as KSNS this evening.

&&

.MARINE...
(Tonight through next Saturday)
Issued at 246 PM PDT Mon Jun 9 2025

Fresh northwest breezes persist across the waters through mid
week, becoming strong for the second half of the week. A low,
amplitude, long period southwesterly swell persists through
Tuesday morning, bringing enhanced currents. Near gale force winds
possible over the outer waters by the end of the week.

&&

.BEACHES...
Issued at 117 PM PDT Sun Jun 8 2025

A long period southerly swell will enter the waters Monday into
Tuesday bringing a higher risk for rip current along beaches.
Breaking waves about 5 to 7 feet, but strong currents and sneaker
waves will be the bigger hazard. Use caution near the water and
never turn your back on the ocean.
