Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ
200 AM MST Wed Dec 24 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Daytimes highs forecast to be cooler through the next
several days, although still remaining above normal for this time
of year. Precipitation also rejoins the forecast now through
Friday, with rainfall being the main precipitation type outside of
the highest mountains peaks. Snow levels could drop early on
Saturday, allowing for light accumulation above 7000`.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Rainfall amounts so far aren`t anything to write
home about, but it`s a start! Accumulation from the last 6 hours
has been generally less than 0.15", and those higher values are
mostly along upslope areas across Yavapai County. This first push
of moisture will continue moving eastward through the morning
hours, where upsloping will once again likely influence greater
rainfall amounts, primarily across the Mogollon Rim. Temperatures
are mostly in the 40s and 50s currently, so by no surprise snow
accumulation is not anticipated for populated areas. We could see
light accumulation on the highest mountains peaks, but snow levels
look to climb above 10,000 feet through the morning hours.
The next wave of moisture looks to move through later
tonight/early Thursday morning. Although snow levels will slowly
drop from the northwest to the southeast, snow accumulation will
remain limited to areas above 8000-9000 feet. As for rainfall,
greatest QPF amounts should remain across Yavapai County,
especially along upslope areas. We can`t rule out rivers/streams
seeing rises through the period, but we aren`t expecting
significant impacts. This will just be something we closely
monitor through the next few days.
We`ll see a brief lull in activity Thursday evening through
Friday afternoon. During this time, the large area of low pressure
along the West Coast that`s been the source of moisture this week,
will push closer to Arizona. Although Model guidance is looking
more in agreement with one another compared to the last couple of
days, there are still discrepancies. Ultimately, additional
precipitation is forecast for Friday evening through Saturday
morning, with greater chances for accumulating snow down to 7000
feet. Snow totals are not impressive at this time, and there is
still uncertainty with how much moisture we`ll see, so check back
for details.
Sunday onward...Models suggest a closed low forming from the
previously mentioned trough, but placement and trajectory are
still varying. In short, next week could hold additional showers
or it could be the return of a warmer/drier pattern.
&&
.AVIATION...Wednesday 24/06Z through Thursday 25/06Z...VFR conditions
becoming MVFR or lower in increasing SHRA from west to east, mainly
along and west/south of KPGA-KPAN-KSOW line. S-SW winds 5-15 kts
with gusts 20-30 kts continuing through the night.
OUTLOOK...Thursday 25/06Z through Saturday 27/06Z...SCT/NMRS SHRA
with areas of MVFR/IFR or lower, mainly along and west of KGCN-
KFLG-KPAN line. S-SW winds 10-20 kts with gusts 25-35 kts each
day, remaining elevated at night.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Today and Thursday...Multiple periods of rain
showers will continue through Thursday. Rainfall chances will be
highest along and west of the Mogollon Rim and Kaibab Plateau where
0.50-1.50 inches of wetting rain are likely. The snow level will
range from 9,000-10,000 feet. Winds south to southwest at 10-20 mph
with gusts 25-35 mph each day.
Friday through Sunday...Chances for showers will continue,
diminishing on Sunday. Wetting rains will remain primarily along and
west of the Mogollon Rim and Kaibab Plateau, with lighter
precipitation amounts expected through this period. Snow levels may
lower down to 6,000-7,000 feet on Saturday. Winds south to southwest
10-20 mph gusting around 30 mph on Friday, becoming west at 5-15 mph
on Saturday, then turning northeast to east on Sunday.
