Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Huntsville AL
131 PM CDT Fri Jun 20 2025

...New SHORT TERM...

.NEAR TERM...
(Rest of Today and Tonight)
Issued at 935 AM CDT Fri Jun 20 2025

Low clouds remained firmly in place over much of the Tennessee
Valley. Given that most of the fog has dissipated or will be doing
so shortly, have allowed a Dense Fog Advisory to expire at 9 AM.
These lower clouds were evident via the visible band, producing
overcast low IFR (300-500 ft AGL) and IFR (500-1000 ft AGL) cloud
bases; and most opaque from NW Alabama and adjacent Tennessee to
southern DeKalb and over much of Cherokee counties. The clouds
however were dissipating and thinning, thus should not be a
serious issue within the next hour or so.

Afterwards with generally unfiltered solar insolation expected,
high temperatures despite a moist ground should rise into upper
80s to around 90, with heat indices 4-8 degrees warmer. Today is
also the first day of summer, with the solstice occurring around
942 PM.

.SHORT TERM...
(Saturday through Sunday)
Issued at 131 PM CDT Fri Jun 20 2025

Upper level ridging builds across the Southeast with high pressure
along the Gulf coast being the main influence on the local
weather. Southerly flow brings in a warm and humid airmass
allowing for temperatures to climb into the low to mid 90s this
weekend. Combined with dewpoints in the low to mid 70s, heat index
values top out in the 100F-107F range with the hottest values
further to the west. As a result, a Heat Advisory was issued for
Saturday from 12pm to 7pm. If forecast holds true, another Heat
Advisory may be needed on Sunday. Not much a reprieve from the
heat during the overnight hours as temperatures only dip down
into the low to mid 70s.

&&

.LONG TERM...
(Sunday night through Thursday)
Issued at 946 PM CDT Thu Jun 19 2025

Strong ridging aloft coupled with high pressure at the surface will
be dominating the SE by the start of the week. This will
unfortunately contribute to a significant warming trend through
the long term with high temperatures in the mid 90s by the start
of the work week. SW flow around surface high pressure will
support high tropical dew points from the Gulf in the 70s each
day. These two factors together will amount to apparent
temperatures near and above 100 degrees each afternoon. These high
temperatures and apparent temperatures raise significant concerns
for heat next week with the concern reflected in our heat risk
pushing into the Major category (3/4) for most of the area by
Tuesday. This level of heat risk poses a risk to anyone without
proper cooling or hydration.

The ridge looks to amplify through Thursday reaching its peak near
600 dam. Under this heat dome, Wednesday and Thursday look to be the
hottest days with urban areas seeing extreme heat risk (4/4). Recent
forecast trends have continued to raise temps and dew points,
amounting to heat advisory criteria (heat index of 105 or above) being
met by the current forecast for large portions of the area on
Wednesday and Thursday. While we are much too far out for the
issuance of any products, we will be keeping an eye on forecast
trends as next week draws near. In the meantime, take some time to
prepare you and your family for dealing with the heat. This
includes making sure to have water available, having access to
shade via hats or overhangs, using sunscreen, and potentially
shift activities to cooler portions of the day.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1204 PM CDT Fri Jun 20 2025

Morning low clouds have finally mixed out across northern Alabama.
VFR conditions with light and variable winds will persist through
the end of the TAF period.
