Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Caribou ME
616 AM EDT Thu May 22 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain to our northeast today as low pressure
develops along the Mid Atlantic coast. Low pressure will track
into the Gulf of Maine tonight...track across the Downeast
coast on Friday...and stall over Eastern Maine on Saturday. The
low will weaken and track into the Maritimes Sunday followed by
high pressure Monday. Another low pressure moves in late next
week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
6:15 AM Update...A corridor of clear sky has moved over the
northeast allowing temps to fall to near freezing in some of the
coldest valleys. Soundings are indicating some cumulus forming
with bases 3K to 4K feet during the midday, so carrying partly
cloudy, with a trend toward mostly cloudy late today north as
the clouds move up from the south. Adjusted temps and cloud
cover through early morning.

Previous discussion...
High pressure centered over the Northern Maritimes and Labrador
has backed some drier clearer air into the northeastern portion
of our region from the northeast overnight. This will begin
some northern areas mostly clear this morning. However, moist
air remains in the lowest 5000 feet and some patchy cumulus and
stratocumulus will likely redevelop after sunrise. Meanwhile,
low pressure will be developing off the Mid-Atlantic coast
supported by jet energy rounding the bottom of an upper low over
the Eastern Great Lakes. Mid and high clouds will spread north
from this low, first Downeast early today then across the north
later this afternoon. Rain ahead of this low will spread into
the Downeast coast this evening then progress north reaching
northern areas early Friday morning. Chilly air backing into the
area from the northeast will result in the rain mixing with
snow over the highlands above 2000 ft and a slushy accumulation
is possible over the highest ridges above 3200 ft toward morning
on Friday.

A tight gradient between the high to the northeast and the
low lifting up from the south will result in a stiff East wind
along the coast. Issued a wind advisory for the coast from late
this afternoon through tonight with winds possibly gusting up to
45 mph in a few gusts.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Low pressure system slides along the Gulf of Maine on Friday,
bringing ample moisture and a tightening pressure gradient. As
a result of this, easterly winds stay gusty throughout Maine,
predominantly along the coast and over the waters. Low pressure
slowly moves northeast, moving over Washington county before
parking there. Highs on Friday in the 40s throughout the area
due to some cold air advecting into the area with this
northeasterly flow. A concern for the short term period is a
potential for snowfall over higher terrain on Friday morning.
Based on soundings, kept most areas as rain, and higher terrain
(i.e. mountains) have the best potential to see some wet snow
fall. Rain continues to fall overnight, as skies stay overcast.
Lows Friday night are forecast to be in the lower 40s.

On Saturday, low pressure parks over the Downeast region, most
likely due to blocking pattern high pressure over in the middle
of the country. As a result, rain continues into Saturday
night. Potential for fog development early Saturday morning due
to decreasing wind speeds and plenty of low-level moisture. Highs
are forecast to be in the upper-40s / low-50s. Rain begins to
subside Saturday night as low begins to move into Canada,
bringing the precipitation with it. Overnight lows in the
low-40s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Low pressure system moves into New Brunswick, bringing a brief
period of dry weather and some clearing skies due to some
ridging. This is short lived however, as another low pressure
system moves through Maine late next week into next weekend.
With this system, looking at rain showers Wednesday into
Thursday night. High temperatures gradually increase into the
weekend, going up into the 70s. Low temperatures stay in the
low-to-mid 40s.

&&

.AVIATION /10Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
NEAR TERM: VFR conditions across the north will lower to MVFR
late tonight and possibly IFR by early Friday morning.
Increasing east winds. VFR to MVFR conditions over southern
areas will drop to IFR this evening and remain IFR overnight.
Increasing east winds today into tonight with gusts up to 40 kt
tonight.

SHORT TERM:

Friday - Friday Night...MVFR/IFR conditions due to low ceilings
and rain. Fog may develop overnight, reducing visibility. Winds
from the NE at 10-15 kts, then shifting N/NW overnight. Gusts
20-25 kts possible.

Saturday - Saturday Night...MVFR/IFR conditions due to low
ceilings and rain showers. Rain gradually begins to diminish
overnight. Patchy fog possible in the morning hours. Winds from
the NE at 5-10 kts in the north, and from the W/NW at 5-10 kts
in the south.

Sunday - Sunday Night...MVFR conditions due to rain showers,
which gradually taper off overnight. VFR conditions overnight.
Light winds from the NW at 5-10 kts.

Monday...VFR conditions. Winds from the NW at 5-10 kts.

&&

.MARINE...
NEAR TERM: A gale warning will be up from late this afternoon
through tonight for E winds gusting up to 45 kt. Seas will build
up to 10 to 12 ft overnight in response to the easterly.

with winds to gust up to 40 kts and seas up to 10-12 ft. Winds
begin to by late Friday morning, staying Small Craft criteria
until late Friday evening. Seas stay elevated until Saturday
