Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Caribou ME
603 AM EDT Wed May 21 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will be north of the area today and tonight. Low
pressure will develop off the Mid-Atlantic coast on Thursday and
track into the Gulf of Maine Thursday night. Low pressure will
slowly cross Downeast Maine on Friday and continue into the
Maritimes Saturday into Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Update...
Latest visible satellite imagery shows clouds across the north
but mainly clear across the Bangor region. Current temperatures
were in the lower 40s. No significant changes at this hour.

previous discussion
High pressure will continue to ridge down across the area from
the north through tonight. This will keep a light east to
northeast flow across the region. Some model guidance hints at
the potential for isolated showers or sprinkles this afternoon
but not totally sold on this. Thus, will not mention with this
forecast package. Expect mainly cloudy skies through tonight,
as forecast soundings do indicate moisture will remain trapped
below a persistent inversion. Afternoon highs will remain below
normal for this date once again today. Expect highs generally in
the mid to upper 50s today across the region. Lows tonight
across the north will generally range from the the upper 30s, but
some of the locally colder valleys could even fall into the mid
30s. With anticipated cloud cover, current thinking is frost
will likley not be a concern. But if we were to see less cloud
cover than currently expected, patchy frost could not be totally
ruled out in the colder valleys of the north. Next shift will
need to monitor this. Otherwise, lows tonight for the Bangor
region and Downeast will generally be around 40.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure will be poised over far Eastern Canada Thursday
morning, continuing to ridge south across our region. Meanwhile, low
pressure will be developing off the Mid-Atlantic coast supported by
jet energy rounding the bottom of a large trough centered over the
Eastern Great Lakes. The low will slowly intensify as it tracks
northeast to a position off Cape Cod Thursday afternoon and then on
into the Western Gulf of Maine Thursday night. The tightening
gradient between this developing low and the high over Eastern
Canada will bring a brisk east wind late Thursday into Thursday
night as a band of rain lifts north across our area ahead of the
low. The upper low centered over the Eastern Great Lakes on Thursday
will recenter over the new low across Maine on Friday. Rain will
continue across the area Friday. The new surface low will then
occlude and begin to weaken later Friday. This means rain will
become lighter and more intermittent Friday night as the surface low
slows down and gradually moves across the Downeast region.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Low pressure will gradually continue across the eastern part of our
region on Saturday with low clouds, patchy light rain and drizzle
remaining over the area, mainly over central and northern parts of
the region. The low will continue to weaken and lift across the
Northern Maritimes on Sunday. Moisture wrapping back around the low
will sustain low clouds and some showers, mostly across the north on
Sunday.

The low continuing away to the northeast early next week will allow
weak surface high pressure and upper ridging to build into the area
Monday. Some low level moisture will linger, at least initially. The
days mixing should then allow partial sunshine Monday with highs
getting into the mid 60s. High pressure will maintain dry weather
through Tuesday with some sunshine and highs Tuesday making a run
for the upper 60s.

Our focus mid week next week may then turn to another large Great
Lakes trough and surface low approaching from the west. This could
bring more rain mid week. However, this is not looking like a well
organized system with forecast models disagreeing on it`s
structure and position this far out.

.AVIATION /10Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
NEAR TERM: Mainly VFR through tonight, although occasional MVFR
ceilings are possible. E to NE wind 5 to 10 kt through tonight.

SHORT TERM:
Thursday...MVFR to VFR north. MVFR south, possibly becoming IFR
late. E wind.

Thursday night...MVFR becoming IFR north. IFR south. Brisk E wind.

Friday...IFR in low clouds and rain. Brisk NE wind.

Friday night...IFR in occasional rain. NE to N wind.

Saturday...IFR in low clouds and showers. N to NW wind.

Saturday night...IFR, becoming MVFR. NW wind.

Sunday...MVFR to VFR south. IFR to MVFR north. NW wind.

&&

.MARINE...
NEAR TERM: Winds/seas are expected to remain below small craft
levels through tonight.

SHORT TERM:
A gale is expected from late Thursday afternoon through Thursday
night and into most of Friday morning. Low pressure lifting
north from the Mid-Atlantic will bring strong east winds as it
pushes up against high pressure to the north. Seas will build up
to 10 ft Thursday night into Friday in response to the easterly.
A SCA for seas would likely need to continue into Friday night.
Wind and seas should then be below SCA from Saturday into early
next week.

     051.
