.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 235 AM EST Wed Dec 24 2025
Clearing skies and light winds have allowed for radiation fog to
develop and persist early this morning. Nighttime satellite
imagery and surface observations show patchy dense fog around
the area. Visibilities as low as 1/4 mile have been reported
over the past few hours, but they are gradually rising as drier
air works in. Fog will continue to dissipate in the coming
hours, although there may still be locally dense patches
(especially in rural and low lying areas).
Today is another mild day with highs expected to be in the 40s. High
pressure is building in over the Midwest, although clouds move in
this morning and make for a mostly cloudy day. Southeasterly winds
prevail ahead of a warm front that lifts north through the mid
Mississippi River valley this afternoon/evening. As moisture
increases out ahead of the front, chances for light rain/drizzle
arrive after sunset. Precipitation may start out as scattered light
rain initially tonight before transitioning to drizzle Thursday
morning (Christmas Day) as inversion heights crash and dry air aloft
tries to work its way in. Much of the daytime hours on Christmas Day
will be dry. Highs will be above normal for Christmas with
temperatures in the low 40s to near 50 degrees (warmest south of US
24).
A better chance for rain arrives early Friday morning before sunrise
as another warm front surges north into our area. Moderate to heavy
rain is possible at times with temperatures in the mid to upper 30s
for much of the area. Freezing rain appears to be the favored
dominant precip type for several hours across far southern Lower
Michigan, northwest Ohio, and northeast Indiana where temperatures
will be at or just below freezing. Soundings from the NAM and GFS
show a stout warm nose aloft (temps around 10C around 3kft) with
surface temperatures hovering at or slightly below freezing on
Friday morning. This setup is also concerning because winds will be
southeast/east, which is a favored profile for ice accumulations in
this area. While exact timing and accumulations are still uncertain,
it is not out of the question that somewhere along/east of I-69 and
along/north of I-90 (our far northeast CWA) sees a tenth of an inch
of ice accumulate on Friday morning. Ice accumulations will make for
slick roads Friday morning. Plan post-Christmas travel accordingly.
A low pressure system looks to impact the Great Lakes region on
Sunday and into early next week. Rain changes to lake effect snow
Sunday. The tightening pressure gradient around the low will also
make for strong winds; northwest winds late Sunday into Monday may
gust as high as 40 mph. Temperatures will be sharply colder due to
CAA behind the system, with highs only in the 20s by Monday and
Tuesday.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z THURSDAY/...
Issued at 1256 AM EST Wed Dec 24 2025
Mostly clear skies early on this morning has allowed good
radiational cooling and light winds and some patchy dense fog
has developed for parts of the area. KFWA has dropped down to
LIFR categories with 1/4 mile vsbys and looks to remain for the
majority of the overnight hours. Could see some temporary
improvement to IFR with the patchy nature of the fog but with
light winds will be hard to clear out the fog once it forms in
any location. An increase of mid to high clouds from the
northwest will spread southeastward over the area and some drier
air will also advect in this should help to minimize any
further development and perhaps some slight improvement in areas
with mist/fog present currently. This has allowed KSBN to stay
in VFR category and should stay that way through the overnight
period. Otherwise after 18z Wed for KFWA will see a return to
VFR conditions. Late in this forecast period we will again see
vsbys once again drop with mist/fog and KFWA will see the lowest
drops in vsbys into IFR/LIFR while KSBN vsby looks to drop down
to IFR categories with an influx in higher moisture advecting
into the area.
