Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
907 PM MST Tue Nov 12 2024

.DISCUSSION...A round of precipitation along a warm front will
move into portions of SE Oregon late tonight and SW Idaho on
Wednesday. The focus of the precipitation is expected over the
northern high terrain due to upslope forcing from strong mid-
level southwesterly flow. Little or no precipitation will occur
near the Nevada border. Snow levels ranging from 3500-4000 feet
in the morning rise to 4000-5000 feet during the afternoon. A
deep surface low off the coast will enhance the pressure
gradient resulting in increasing SE-SW winds, especially in
southern Harney County where gusts approach advisory levels
during the afternoon. Temperatures average a few degrees above
normal. No updates.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR prevailing through 13/06z. Rain/snow spreading
into eastern Oregon after 13/06z with areas of MVFR/IFR
impacting KBKE/KBNO by 13/12Z. Mountain obscuration. Snow levels
near 4000 ft MSL. Surface winds: generally E-SE 5-15 kt. Winds
aloft at 10kft MSL: SW 15-30 kt.

KBOI...VFR. Surface winds: SE 5-15 kt.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...Tonight through Thursday night...A weak upper
level ridge will pass over the area this evening. After that, a
large trough will bring periods of mountain snow and (mostly)
valley rain to the region through Thursday night. The initial
vort max will move through Wed into Wed night, with snow showers
continuing in the mountains Thu into Thu night. Winds will
increase tomorrow in/near southern Harney County, with gusts
around 40 mph expected. The valleys will see their best chance
of rain (perhaps mixing with a little snow mainly in Elmore
County Wed morning) Wed evening. The most recent guidance has
significantly lowered the QPF, resulting in less snow forecast
for the mountains. The latest expected totals through Thu night
are: 1-2 inches in McCall and only a trace in Idaho City, for
example. Valley locations are now forecast to see less around
0.05 inch or less. Temperatures will be slightly above normal
Wed and Thu.

LONG TERM...Friday through Tuesday...A large trough along the west
coast will move over the forecast area Friday bringing a chance of
rain in the lower valleys and snow in the mountains. Temperatures
will trend down significantly from Thursday to Friday along with
breezy winds. Snow levels generally 3500-4500 ft MSL Friday. As the
trough moves east Friday night and Saturday precipitation will
diminish with breezy northwest winds continuing. Temperatures will
be around 5 degrees below normal both Friday and Saturday. A brief
respite from precip is expected for most of the area Saturday and
Saturday night before the next trough arrives Sunday/Monday. This
trough will bring colder air into the region along with a better
chance of precipitation for most of the area. This will trend
temperatures down even more Monday and Tuesday, with daytime high
temperatures around 10 degrees below normal. Snow levels look to be
low enough for snow in the lower valleys early Sunday then changing
to rain and snow Sunday afternoon. By Monday the precipitation type
looks like snow or rain/snow mix in the lower valleys as the colder
air spreads across the region. High pressure will begin to build on
Tuesday behind the trough, which would increase the chance for
valley inversions to develop while temperatures remain well below
normal.
