Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
850 PM MDT Sat Jun 21 2025
.DISCUSSION...Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
continue to move southeast across the region this evening as the
upper low slowly moves east of the area. We expected convection
to continue through the night, but decrease in coverage and
intensity. Sunday will be unseasonably cool, but like today. The
warmup begins Monday. All this is handled well by the current
forecast and no changes are planned at this time.
&&
.AVIATION...VFR. Scattered showers. Isolated thunderstorms
containing graupel, tapering off after sunset. Areas of mountain
obscuration. Snow Levels: 5500-6500 ft. Surface winds: W-NW 5-15 kt.
Winds aloft at 10kft MSL: W-NW 5-15 kt.
KBOI...VFR. Surface winds: NW 5-15 kt.
SUNDAY OUTLOOK...Scattered showers, areas of MVFR and IFR with
mountain obscuration. Isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon,
mainly over central ID mountains. Surface winds NW 10-20kt,
strongest near KJER KTWF. Thunderstorms may produce gusts up to 35kt
during the afternoon.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday night...
A strong cold core upper low over the area will continue
steering east-northeast into Montana/Wyoming over the weekend.
This pattern will continue scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms (40-60%) through most of the area this evening and
tonight, especially over higher elevations. Isolated thunderstorms
may produce small hail or graupel. Scattered showers are expected to
return through most of Sunday, with isolated thunderstorms mainly
concentrated along the central mountains. Higher wind breezes and
gusts 20-30 mph will be expected to return along the Western Magic
Valley and the Mountain Home area Sunday afternoon.
Snow levels will lower to around 6500 feet MSL across
northern areas Sunday morning, with snow possibly falling as low as
6000 feet. Accumulating snow will be confined to elevations above
7000 feet, where up to 3 inches is possible-most likely across
Valley County. Morning lows will dip into the mid 30s in mountain
valleys and mid 40s across the Snake River Plain. Slight warming is
expected in the afternoon, but highs will still run 15 degrees or
more below normal. The upper-level trough will remain in place over
the region on Monday, keeping temperatures below normal. However,
conditions will be drier and winds lighter. Valley highs will warm
slightly, reaching about 5 degrees below seasonal averages. Monday
night will see valley temperatures in the 50s and mountain
temperatures in the 40s.
LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday...
A weak upper level trough will dig across the northwest
and great basin regions through Tuesday. Moisture levels are too low
to favor any precipitation from this system. Brief ridging will
follow on Wednesday and bring valley daytime temperatures in the
lower 90s before a large, slow-moving upper trough begins
encroaching into the northwest region Wednesday to the end of the
week. There is considerable uncertainty over the precipitation
intensity produced by this system. For now, areas will generally see
dry conditions and a warming trend 5-10 degrees above normal
Wednesday into Saturday.
