.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Monday)
Issued at 327 AM EST Sun Dec 22 2024

Skies are crystal clear early this morning with crisp temperatures
ranging from the lower 20s in the extreme NE to the mid 30s in the
SE. At least the winds are lighter than this time yesterday, with
many locations reporting near calm winds.

NW winds aloft today on the backside of an upper trough along the E
Seaboard of the U.S. will become more zonal as we head into Monday. A
very weak shortwave is forecast to move from the lower MS Valley
across our area by Monday night. At the surface, a high pressure
ridge from the E Great Lakes to the central Gulf Coast will shift E
by Monday and extend from New England to N GA. An inverted trough is
forecast to sharpen off the FL and GA coasts. This will produce
shower activity, and some of these showers may make it into our SE
zones by late in the day Monday along with increased cloudiness in
that area.

High temperatures today will be similar to highs on Saturday,
ranging from near 40 in the N mountains to the lower 50s across the
S. Low temperatures Monday morning will be similar to this morning,
ranging from the lower 20s in the NE to the lower 30s in the extreme
SE. High temperatures on Monday will be a bit warmer than today in
most locations. At least the days are getting longer, with about 2
seconds more of daylight today versus yesterday! By the end of the
year, we`ll be gaining half a minute of daylight per day. /SEC

.LONG TERM...
(Monday night through Saturday)
Issued at 327 AM EST Sun Dec 22 2024

Highlights:

 - Several waves of light rainfall will move through over the course
of the week -- including Christmas Day

 - Slightly above normal temperatures through the extended

We transition from a NW flow pattern to more of a split flow pattern
with several shortwaves forecast to move across the Southeast. This
will result in several instances of light precipitation moving
through over the course of the week. At the start of the long term
(Monday Night - Christmas Eve Eve), an inverted surface trough will
be tracking NE just off the GA coastline. This will bring a nose of
moisture and a chance for light rain across our southeast zones.
Temperatures will be falling during this time and look to be a degree
or 2 above freezing thus limiting the potential for mixed precip.
Will still need to monitor closely in subsequent forecasts.

Tuesday (Christmas Eve), looks to remain dry as a weak midlevel
ridge will be in place aloft. Light rain/drizzle are forecast to
spread across the area on Wednesday (Christmas) as a result of a
passing shortwave and weak cold front. With this system losing steam
as it enters the forecast area, the highest rain chances remain
confined to NW GA. Rainfall is still expected to be light, with most
locations receiving less than a tenth of an inch. A CAD wedge looks
to try and set up Thursday and Friday resulting weekend bringing
another round of rain to the area. Unlike the previous system, light
rain looks to be more widespread.Thunderstorms appear unlikely
through the long term given lack of instability and upper level
support.

Temperatures through the long term will be slightly above normal
with forecast highs ranging from the mid 50s to mid 60s. Monday Night
will be the coldest night of the long term with temperatures in the
30s areawide (upper 20s in the mtns). Otherwise, forecast lows will
generally be in the upper 30s to 40s.
