.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Thursday)
Issued at 304 AM EST Wed Dec 24 2025
The main storyline for the next few days across North and Central
GA will be the potentially record setting warm temperatures. The
primary driver of this will be a strong and expansive mid-level
ridge covering most of the Continental US. With Georgia set on the
northeast side of the ridge axis, low to mid-level flow will be
out of the W/NW and continuously pump an anomalously warm airmass
over the state. This is already evident in low temperatures early
this morning, with most areas in the 50s, which is at or above
the typical high temperature for this time of year. As we move
through the morning and into the afternoon, the low clouds over
north GA will gradually scatter out, with most of the region
eventually seeing sunny skies. Temperatures will soar to near or
above record levels by mid to late afternoon, reaching the low to
mid 70s in north GA, and mid to upper 70s in central GA. One thing
that could throw a wrench into any record temperatures is
stubborn cloud cover, especially across far NW GA. For reference,
temperature records for the climate sites over the next few days
are in the Climate section below.
Tonight into Christmas morning, temperatures will gradually cool
back down into the 50s. We will have to watch out for the
potential development of areas of dense fog due to the
combination of warm dewpoints, mostly clear skies and light winds.
Any fog or low clouds in the morning will again gradually scatter
out to mostly clear skies by Thursday afternoon, with high temps
again climbing into the low to mid 70s in north GA, and mid to
upper 70s in central GA.

.LONG TERM...
(Thursday night through Tuesday)
Issued at 304 AM EST Wed Dec 24 2025
Friday through Sunday:
Anomalously warm temperatures will be with us through the
weekend, with high temperatures some 15-22 degrees above average
and low temperatures some 18-28 degrees above average. Friday
through Saturday, the stout mid-/upper-level ridge that will be
responsible for the very warm, mainly dry weather this holiday
week will have largely weakened and shifted east as a more
progressive pattern takes hold aloft. It is still looking like a
mid-level shortwave trough passing over the Ohio River Valley
Friday afternoon into early Saturday could spread isolated to
scattered light showers across portions of north Georgia.
On Sunday, ensemble guidance continues to depict phasing of the
polar and subtropical jet streams over the Great Lakes and Ohio
River Valley, which will support the progression of surface low
pressure and a cold front across the Mississippi River Valley and
Tennessee River Valley. The result will be showers increasing in
coverage from west to east across the area from Sunday afternoon
through early Monday morning. At this juncture, continuing to
leave thunder out of the forecast, as ensemble guidance is not
generating any instability and the progged synoptic pattern does
not seem conducive for deep convection.
Early Next Week:
Behind the cold front will be strong northwest flow and cold air
advection (CAA), which will bring a significant cool-down Monday
into Tuesday. We are currently looking at as much as a 20-30
degree temperature difference between highs on Sunday (mainly in
the 70s) and highs on Monday (as chilly as the 40s across north
Georgia). Additionally, there is a signal that winds could be
quite breezy Monday into Monday night, as flow in the lower-/mid-
levels is progged to be relatively strong. On top of this, the
cold air mass settling in will be dry, so hazardous fire weather
conditions may return. Stay tuned.

.AVIATION...
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 542 AM EST Wed Dec 24 2025
VFR conditions at all sites to start the 12Z TAF period with SCT-
BKN CIGs at 040-060. These will gradually lift and scatter out to
mostly SKC by late morning to early afternoon. Confidence in the
forecast becomes much lower for late tonight into Thurs AM with
high spread in guidance. Current TAF has some VFR CIGs moving
back in after 11Z, but there is also potential for patchy FG
during that time. Winds NW at 5-9 kts today, going light
overnight, then turning out of the W at 6-10kts Thurs AM.
//ATL Confidence...12Z Update...
Low-medium in CIG/VIS Thursday AM. High for other elements.
