...Afternoon Area Forecast Discussion...
.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 208 PM EST Mon Feb 2 2026

widespread light rain to the area late Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Benign weather and temperatures near daily normals during the
late week and weekend.

.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Tuesday)
Issued at 208 PM EST Mon Feb 2 2026
Deep longwave troughing continues to move eastward into the Atlantic
and way from the region while surface high pressure advances slowly
across the northern Gulf. Temperatures will begin to moderate under
the influence of this high, with temperatures largely rising into
the mid 40s to low 50s this afternoon. These temperatures and mostly
clear skies should put an end to lingering black ice concerns in
northeast Georgia aside from a few patchy locations in the highest
elevations that may remain shaded. Winds diminishing to 5 mph or
less tonight will combine with mostly clear skies and allow for
efficient radiational cooling. As such, low temperatures on Tuesday
morning will range from the mid 20s to near 30. On Tuesday, a mid-
level shortwave will move through the midwest and push into the
Tennessee Valley region. Southwesterly flow ahead of this
disturbance will promote advection of warm and moist air into the
forecast area. Dewpoints climbing from the low 20s to the upper 30s
and low 40s by the end of the day, while high temperatures will rise
into the mid to upper 50s in north Georgia and low to mid 60s in
central Georgia.
The progression of the shortwave will also help advance a cold front
towards north Georgia over the course of the day on Tuesday. Cloud
cover will gradually increase and lower throughout the day.
Scattered showers will then arrive in far northwest Georgia by the
mid-afternoon hours, becoming more widespread across the northern
tier on Tuesday night. The frontal boundary itself will enter the
forecast area early Wednesday, continuing south and east along with
the axis of showers during the daytime. With temperatures not too
cold and not too warm, this system is anticipated to be a
"Goldilocks" situation for north and central Georgia: Precipitation
associated with the front is expected to remain all liquid with low
temperatures on Wednesday being in the upper 30s in far northeast
Georgia and 40s elsewhere across the forecast area. On the other
hand, warm air advection ahead of the system will likely not be
enough to promote sufficient destabilization for convective
development. Thus, a widespread stratiform rain with no thunder is
favored for this event. Rainfall totals through Wednesday are
forecast to range from 0.25 to 0.5 inch, with locally higher amounts
up to 0.75 inch in the higher elevations in the far northern tier.
The cold front and associated precipitation are expected to exit the
forecast area to the southeast by Wednesday evening.

.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday morning through next Sunday)
Issued at 208 PM EST Mon Feb 2 2026
The extended forecast begins on the heels of the exiting frontal
boundary from the short term. The main closed low center will be
over SC and continue moving east out to sea by daybreak Thu. We will
still see some back side clouds and maybe some light freezing/frozen
precipitation across the higher elevations of the north GA mountains
but no accumulations expected. Temps Thu morning will be at or below
the freezing mark for most locations across north and central GA.
with this in mind, we may see some patchy areas of black ice for
those locations where the precip was unable to dry off the roadways
before the colder temps moved in. Temps do rebound quickly back into
the 40s and 50s across the area Thu so any inconveniences Thu
morning will be short lived. Looking at Fri and into the weekend,
there are a few weak waves that skirt past north GA in the upper
level NWLY flow, but things should remain dry through day 7.
Daytime highs Fri through Sun will be mainly in the 50s and 60s with
morning low temps in the upper 20s and 30s.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1235 PM EST Mon Feb 2 2026
VFR conditions are expected through the period. Scattered clouds
between 070-080 across portions of north Georgia will continue to
diminish over the next few hours, giving way to mostly clear
skies. Winds will be NW at 7-10 kts this afternoon, weakening to
3-5 kts and shifting to SW between 00-02Z. These SW winds will
increase to 6-9 kts by 15Z on Tuesday. Cloud ceilings around
050-060 will develop late in the period at ATL, around 21Z on
Tuesday.
//ATL Confidence...18Z Update...
High confidence on all elements.
