Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
342 AM EDT Mon Jul 28 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Dangerous heat and humidity expected through Wednesday as high
pressure is in place. A front slowly moves through Wednesday Night
through Thursday Night, bringing unsettled weather. High pressure
takes control for the weekend though, with a return to more tranquil
weather.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
In the wake of a cold front passage early this morning, temperatures
and dew points are not budging much and remain mainly in the low-mid
70s. With the continued saturation at the surface and light winds,
some patchy fog is developing across the area. This is expected to
continue through sunrise before gradually dissipating with the start
of daytime heating.
As we head into the daytime hours, the lack of cooling behind the
front will lead to the beginning of a prolonged period of hot and
humid conditions. Temperatures will rise this afternoon into the low-
mid 90s while dew points remain right around 70. As a result, heat
indicies this afternoon will rise into the upper 90s to low 100s
across the region. A Heat Advisory has been issued for most
locations within the I-95 corridor northward into central New Jersey
as well as the inland portions of Monmouth and Ocean counties where
heat indicies in excess of 100 degrees are expected.
Otherwise, the near term forecast will be dry as high pressure
builds in with light winds expected. For tonight, the muggy
conditions will continue, with lows once again only falling into the
low-mid 70s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
A Heat Advisory was issued for SE PA, the I-95 corridor, and central
and northern NJ for both Tuesday and Wednesday as heat indices
between 100 and 105 are expected.
Tuesday and Wednesday actually look quite similar weather-wise.
Dangerous heat and humidity is expected as temperatures climb into
the mid to upper 70s. With dew points in the upper 60/low 70s, heat
indices look to get into triple digits both days. As a result, a
Heat Advisory was issued for areas where criteria for an advisory is
between 100-105 heat index. Wednesday could feature some showers and
thunderstorms late in the day as a front approaches, but the bulk of
precipitation comes more on Thursday.
Warm and muggy nights expected both Tuesday and Wednesday night as
lows will be in the mid to upper 70s, with dew points in the 70s.
Tuesday Night will be dry but Wednesday Night will have some
scattered downpours and embedded thunderstorms around, mainly for
areas north and west of Philadelphia.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A cold front approaches on Wednesday Night and slowly moves through
on Thursday. Most of the deterministic guidance tries to develop an
area of low pressure along the front in the vicinity of our area as
well, likely resulting in a wet and stormy day, continuing into
Thursday Night as the front slowly pushes offshore. What is
concerning is that there is rather high confidence in PWATs pushing
above 2 inches, a signal that has been in the deterministic guidance
for a few days now. Model soundings from the global models show tall
and skinny CAPE profiles too, as well as a deep warm cloud layer
with the freezing level around 650 mb. It will feel downright
tropical overall with efficient rainfall producers Thursday into
Thursday Night. WPC maintains a Slight (2/4) risk for excessive
rainfall, which matches our thinking as well that is could
potentially be a day to watch for flash flooding. While it is a bit
early to get into specific rainfall amounts, the NBM probability of
rainfall > 1 inch on Thursday is nearly 50% across the entire area.
There is also a nonzero severe threat but less confidence in
specific hazards and threat level this far out. Temperatures fall
considerably with the widespread showers and thunderstorms compared
to earlier in the week, with temperatures receding back into the
80s, though dew points in the mid 70s will make it feel downright
tropical.
Some showers continue to linger into Friday, but improving
conditions are likely as the front continues to move offshore and
high pressure nudges in from the northwest. The expansive area of
high pressure will be slow to move in and move offshore, resulting
in an extended stretch of nice weather into the weekend. With below
normal H5 heights overhead as a trough passes over the northeast US,
temperatures will actually be quite comfortable to start August.
Potentially looking at upper 70s/low 80s and mostly sunny skies.
Early indications are that it could perhaps be the nicest weekend of
the summer.
