with a possible slight increase in winds this weekend which
could produce minor impacts to fire, aviation, and recreation.

.DISCUSSION...
The high pressure ridge that provided this week`s recent heat
continues to retreat away from CA-NV, allowing for a low pressure
trough to set up near the west coast through Friday. This trough
will push into the Pacific Northwest this weekend, then as next
week progresses, the large scale pattern will retrograde with high
pressure rebuilding over the Four Corners region and the trough
offshore from the west coast.
The weather highlights for this overall pattern include continued
cooling for the next few days. Today`s highs will settle into the
lower-mid 90s for lower elevations and mid 80s for Sierra
communities--near average for mid-August. Then temperatures drop
further to a few degrees below average, with the coolest day
projected Sunday as highs range from the mid-80s to near 90 in
lower elevations and 70s for Sierra communities. Eventually, a
warmup to near or slightly above average returns by mid-late next
week, but triple digit heat currently isn`t anticipated for
western NV. Typical afternoon zephyr-type breezes are expected for
the next several days, although latest ensemble guidance favors a
slight upward trend in wind gusts (near or a bit above 30 mph)
for this weekend.
While most areas will be dry for the upcoming week, isolated
showers and thunderstorms remain possible today and Friday for
Mono and southern Mineral counties. Coverage is expected to be
more sparse compared to yesterday, with storm chances generally
10-20%. For this weekend, increasing moisture associated with the
Pacific Northwest trough is leading to an upward trend for shower
and thunderstorm chances across northeast CA-far northwest NV,
mainly north of a Susanville-Gerlach line. MJD

.AVIATION...
Isolated showers and storms will be possible near KMMH each
afternoon today (10-15% chance) and Friday (about 20% chance).
Otherwise, VFR conditions and dry conditions will prevail today
through this weekend. Typical afternoon breezes are expected with
gusts 20-25 kt at the main terminals today-Friday starting 20-21Z
and winding down between 03-05Z, except ending a bit earlier near
Tahoe. A slight increase in these afternoon winds is possible
this weekend. MJD
