Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV

.KEY MESSAGES...

* A late season storm system bringing rain and snow showers will
continue to impact the region through tonight.

* Chilly and drier conditions Tuesday will be followed by slight
warming and periods of unsettled weather by mid to late week.

* A brief system Wednesday night into Thursday will bring light
  Sierra snow showers.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Sierra snow showers continue today with valley rain through this
afternoon. The heaviest snowfall from this system has passed but
lingering showers today through tonight will bring an additional
8-10" along the highest peaks in the Sierra. For details on snow
levels and snowfall rates, please see the avalanche discussion
below.

As this system exits the region overnight tonight, drier
conditions will build in Tuesday due to a brief ridging pattern.
High temperatures Tuesday will continue to be 8-10 degrees below
normal with highs in the upper 40s and 30s (valleys and Sierra
communities, respectively). Dry conditions and chilly temperatures
will be relatively short lived, however, as a brief low pressure
system starts to impact the area late Wednesday night. This will
bring light Sierra snow showers, primarily north of Lake Tahoe,
through Thursday. Accumulations will be light with up to 3 inches
along the highest peaks in the Tahoe Basin.

Expect a slight warm up Wednesday (highs in the 50s and 40s for
valleys and Sierra communities, respectively) with slightly
cooler temperatures Thursday due to that low pressure system
moving over the area. The low pressure will be out of the area by
late Thursday night, making way for relatively zonal flow Friday.
Light showers can be expected along the OR border Friday, as well,
with a 40% chance of more than 0.1" of rain.

Afternoon highs get back to near normal this weekend but as high
pressure builds over the area, a true warming trend begins. We
currently have an 80% chance of highs reaching 70 degrees in Reno
on Monday, which is about 8-10 degrees above normal. -Giralte

&&

.AVIATION...

IFR/LIFR conditions expected for Sierra terminals today due to
snow showers. Conditions rise to MVFR/VFR by 06Z tonight as the
winter storm system today moves out of the area. Sierra Front
terminals can expect mountain obscurations and MVFR/VFR conditions
throughout today.

Wind gusts up to 30 kts today, gradually dying down after sunset
(except for KMMH). Calmer winds expected Tuesday with drier
conditions. Winds pick back up Wednesday ahead of a brief system
Wednesday night through Thursday. -Giralte

&&

.AVALANCHE...

A winter storm continues today, bringing light to moderate
snowfall through tonight.

* SWE, SLR, and Snow Levels: An additional 0.5" SWE for the Tahoe
Basin through the remainder of today with 1" SWE for Mono
county. SLRs remain between 10-12:1. Snow levels for the Tahoe
Basin will stay below 4000 ft through this evening. Snow levels
around Mammoth are around 5500 ft this afternoon but will drop
below 4000 ft after sunset tonight.

* Snowfall totals and rates: Snow showers taper off today, with
the heaviest snowfall rates having taken place this morning
through early afternoon. Expect 6-10" (6" near the Tahoe Basin
and 10" near Mammoth) of snow this afternoon with an additional
3-4" of snow expected for the highest peaks throughout the
Sierra after 5 pm today. Expect snowfall rates of 0.5-1"/hr (up
to 1.5"/hr Mono county) through the rest of this evening.
