Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco CA
342 PM PST Wed Jan 1 2025
...New AVIATION, MARINE...
.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 1143 AM PST Wed Jan 1 2025
Scattered showers possible in the North Bay today. Light rain
returns to the rest of the region late Thursday into Friday before a
ridge builds into the second week of January.
&&
.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Thursday)
Issued at 1143 AM PST Wed Jan 1 2025
Satellite imagery shows a cloudy North Bay with the cloud cover
progressively decreasing southwards with the South Bay and Central
Coast remaining partly cloudy. This cloud cover is associated with a
moisture plume that focused on southern Oregon and the North Coast,
with the North bay feeling some of the fringe effects from the
system. KMUX radar is showing scattered showers across the North
Bay, with some reports from the public seeing some sprinkles across
parts of Sonoma County this morning. These showers continue through
the rest of the day with precipitation totals remaining very light,
at most a tenth of an inch in favored locations along the coastal
ranges of Sonoma County. Showers will start to dissipate tonight
into Thursday morning, with the moister lower levels promoting an
enhanced chance for fog and low stratus across the North Bay
valleys. High temperatures range in the mid 50s in the North Bay
valleys and the upper 40s to lower 50s in the higher elevations.
Elsewhere in the forecast region, dry conditions continue into
Thursday. Highs range from the upper 50s to the middle 60s in the
lower elevations and the lower to middle 50s in the higher
elevations.
&&
.LONG TERM...
(Thursday night through next Tuesday)
Issued at 1143 AM PST Wed Jan 1 2025
More widespread rainfall comes to the region late Thursday into
Friday with the fringes of another system that will once again
mainly impact Oregon and Northern California. Across our region,
generally beneficial rainfall is expected with totals a quarter to
half an inch of rain in the North Bay valleys, up to one inch in the
North Bay coastal ranges, a tenth to a quarter of an inch across the
Bay Area and the Monterey Bay region, up to half an inch in the Bay
Area mountains, up to a quarter of an inch in the Santa Lucias, and
up to a tenth of an inch in the interior Central Coast. Wind gusts
are not particularly high, with the higher-end of the model
ensembles sitting around the 20-25 mph range, perhaps up to 30-35
mph along the coast, at the ridgelines, and through gaps and passes.
After the rainstorm passes on Saturday, ridging should settle in
across the West Coast and keep our region dry. Ensemble models and
cluster analysis continues to depict ridging continuing into the
second week of January.

northwesterly this afternoon and veering to become offshore again

.MARINE...
(Tonight through next Monday)
Issued at 341 PM PST Wed Jan 1 2025
Mainly light winds continue across the coastal waters and bays
through Thursday night. The probability of wet weather increases
later in the week with a cold front approaching from the northwest
and the front moving across the coastal waters and bays later
Friday. Incoming moderate to long period westerly swell and
northerly breezes will create hazardous conditions Friday and into
next week.
&&
.BEACHES...
Issued at 349 AM PST Wed Jan 1 2025
Wave model forecasts indicate increasingly long period swell arriving
along the entire coastline from Sonoma County to Monterey County later
Friday and lasting into Saturday. Expect dangerous and life threatening
beach conditions beginning late week with high surf, including breakers
possibly reaching 20 to 30 feet, rip currents, sneaker waves, potentially
minor coastal flooding for all beaches. Please - remember to never turn
your back on the ocean and stay out of the water. Stay tuned for the
latest updates concerning the dangerously high surf for late week.
