Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
1042 AM PST Tue Jan 14 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Windy conditions will continue through midweek along
the Colorado River Valley with temperatures remaining seasonably
cool before moderating midweek. Very slight chances for sprinkles
and showers will graze Northwest Arizona Thursday. Additional
gusty winds and renewed cooler temperatures may arrive by next
weekend.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday.
Dry conditions will continue through midweek as northerly flow
remains dominate over the region. Heights will build into the Great
Basin region through Wednesday as well which will reinforce the dry
pattern in place over the region. The main concern will be
persistent northerly winds due to an enhanced pressure gradient
between the building area of high pressure and the cut off low
situated over the southern California Coast. There is a Wind
Advisory in effect for the Colorado River Valley through Wednesday
afternoon where there is a higher risk for impacts. Winds may be
marginal for just wind impacts with probabilities for gusts over 40
MPH remaining isolated and sporadic in time tonight into Wednesday
afternoon, but with the added concern for boating as choppy waves
are expected with continuous north winds gusting 30 to 40 MPH, will
not make changes to the Wind Advisory. Winds will diminish slowly
Wednesday, and the probabilities for gusts over 30 MPH drop off
significantly late Wednesday afternoon, so the Wednesday afternoon
end time also looks good. Outside of the Colorado River Valley, the
probability for impactful wind gusts over 40 MPH is low. Expect
widespread breezy north winds gusting 20 to 30 MPH elsewhere with
the same general trend where winds will be strongest in the morning
before dissipating in the afternoon. With building heights and a
weakening north flow, Wednesday will be a few degrees warmer than
today and skies will remain mostly clear through the period.
.LONG TERM...Thursday through Monday.
Models continue with the same large scale pattern evolution as in
the past couple of days, but with important differences in the
details. Confidence is average. Thursday morning, there is already
some spread in the position of the incoming (formerly) cutoff low
and the moisture plume getting pulled into its southern
semicircle. NBM PoPs for Thursday and Thursday night have trended
downward in our CWA, with only tiny chances for rain in Mohave
county. Once this low passes by, there is still very good
agreement on the existence of a big trough in the nation`s
midsection over the weekend, but differences in the position and
depth. Our area will likely see shortwave troughs zipping down in
the northerly flow on the west side of the longwave trough, but
which wave (if any) will amplify is a guessing game until we get
closer. NBM is giving very small, very broad-brushed PoPs over our
CWA Saturday and Sunday, which is likely a result of uncertainty
in which, if any, wave will be able to wring out the meager
moisture available. The northerly push over our area is likely to
arrive Saturday and stick around through Monday, knocking
temperatures down below normal and bringing another round of
breezy northerly winds.
&&
.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...North to northeast winds with gusts to
25 knots will continue through the afternoon before decreasing and
becoming light and variable after sunset. Winds are expected to
remain between 020 and 040 degrees, but there is a 60 percent chance
they could go as far east as 080 degrees, generally after 22Z. Light
north winds return overnight with speeds remaining below 10 knots.
Similar conditions are expected on Wednesday, with northeast winds
returning after 17Z, although speeds should remain less than 20
knots. No significant cloud cover is forecast through the TAF
period.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...The Las Vegas area TAFs will be similar to what is
discussed for Harry Reid above. Winds in the lower Colorado River
Valley, including KIFP and KEED, will remain out of the north
through Wednesday, with afternoon gusts to near 40 knots continuing
near KIFP. Winds at KEED should top out around 35 knots. At KBIH,
northerly winds are also expected into Wednesday morning, with
speeds will remain less than 10 knots before turning to the south
tomorrow afternoon. Across the western Mojave Desert, including
KDAG, northeast-to-east winds with gusts to 20 knots will continue
through the afternoon before becoming light and variable overnight.
No significant cloud cover is forecast across the entire region
through Wednesday.
