Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
240 PM PDT Sat Jun 21 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Elevated wildfire concerns continue through this evening for
portions of southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona due to low
  humidity and gusty southwest winds.

* Gusty pre- and post-frontal winds will peak across the region
today as a low pressure system digs into the Desert Southwest.

* Below-normal temperatures expected today through midweek, with
temperatures gradually increasing through the work week.

.DISCUSSION...Today through Saturday.

Elevated wildfire concerns continue across southern Nevada and
northwestern Arizona as southwesterly winds peak across the forecast
area this afternoon. These winds will combine with afternoon
relative humidities between 5 and 15 percent and consistently poor
overnight recoveries to increase risk of wildfire starts and
spreads. Temperatures will drop by 4 to 6 degrees on Sunday compared
to today and wind speeds will drop substantially. For these reasons,
wildfire danger will drop enough to allow existing Red Flag Warnings
to expire on time at 2 AM tonight. More more details, find the FIRE
WEATHER discussion below.

A low pressure system dropping through the Great Basin will extend
an associated trough through the Desert Southwest today. The trough
axis and corresponding cold front will pass through the region this
evening, which has resulted in strong pre-frontal southwesterly
gusts with speeds between 40 and 50 mph this afternoon. Wind
Advisories remain in effect for western San Bernardino County, Inyo
County, and Mohave County in addition to a Lake Wind Advisory for
area lakes through this evening as a result. Post-frontal
northwesterly wind gusts will warrant a Wind Advisory across
Esmeralda, central Nye, western Clark County, the Spring Mountains,
and the Morongo Basin in effect from 5 PM this evening through 2 AM
tonight with similar wind gust speeds expected. Wind speeds will
drop substantially across the region by Sunday morning, with the
exception of the Colorado River Valley, where tightened surface
pressure gradients will result in persistent northerly wind gusts
between 20 and 25 mph through early-afternoon.

The aforementioned cold front will allow temperatures to drop 4 to 6
degrees between today and Sunday afternoon. Despite generally weak
troughiness expected across the region through the work week,
heights will slowly rise as a ridge of high pressure builds over
northern Mexico. This will allow temperatures to gradually rebound
above-normal by mid-to-late week. Widespread "Moderate" HeatRisk
returns to the desert valleys next weekend.

.FIRE WEATHER...A Red Flag Warning is in effect through 11 PM this
evening for Nevada Fire Weather Zones 461, 465, and 466 and for
Arizona Fire Weather Zones 101 and 102. Increased risk of wildfire
starts and spreads due to gusty southwest winds between 20 and 30
mph, with gusts between 35 and 45 mph, combined with afternoon
relative humidities between 5 and 15 percent. Outdoor burning as
well as recreation involving sparks or flames is not recommended.
Put out cigarette butts responsibly and ensure vehicle chains are
not dragging on pavement. Temperatures will drop further across the
region tomorrow as wind speeds drop substantially. This will
mitigate wildfire risk for the end of the weekend heading into the
next work week.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 00Z Forecast Package...
South-southwest winds will continue to increase through the
afternoon and evening, with gust speeds peaking between 35 and 40
kts. Gust speed and frequency will decrease after sunset, but
gusts will remain in the prevailing TAF. Around 07Z, winds will
shift from the northwest, though there remains uncertainty
regarding the intensity of the gust speeds with this northwest
push. Favored a stronger solution with gusts between 25 and 30
kts, which will decrease through the morning. Light and diurnal
winds expected on Sunday, with temperatures remaining below 100
degrees today and Sunday. No operationally significant cloud
cover, but expect slantwise visibility reduction in the south and
west from wildfire smoke.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 00Z Forecast Package...South-southwest winds
will continue to increase through the afternoon and evening, with
gust speeds peaking between 35 and 40 kts for Las Vegas Valley
and Colorado River Valley TAF sites... from the north-northwest
for KBIH... and from the west for KDAG. Gust speed and frequency
will decrease after sunset before northwesterly winds pick up
between 06 and 08Z in the Las Vegas Valley and between 12 and 14Z
in the Colorado River Valley. No operationally significant cloud
cover, but expect smoke-related visibility reductions at KBIH and
KDAG overnight and slantwise visibility reductions for all other
TAF sites in the south and west from wildfire smoke.
