Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
433 AM PST Tue Dec 24 2024
.SYNOPSIS...24/242 AM.
A significant high surf event with areas of coastal flooding is
expected through today. Today a weak system will bring cool
temperatures and a few hours of light rain to much of the region,
along with periods of gusty westerly and northerly winds.
Christmas Day will be slightly warmer, starting off a gradual
warming trend into the weekend.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-THU)...24/358 AM.
***Significant high-surf event with coastal flooding expected
through today***
Please reference the High Surf Warning and High Surf Advisory, as
well as the Coastal Flood Advisory, regarding the significant
high-surf event.
Dense fog is common this morning across the coasts, especially
Ventura County northward, due to high pressure over the region.
However, as a cold front begins to impact the region, 500 mb
heights and pressure will rapidly fall. Visibilities have been
already starting to improve along portions of the Central Coast.
Dense fog advisories are in effect through 8 AM today for the
coasts of Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties. As
conditions continue to improve, the advisories may be canceled
early.
Today a weak storm system will bring cool temperatures and a few
hours of light rain. Areas north of Point Conception are likely
to see totals up to around a half an inch this morning, with a
very slight chance of lightning. Under a tenth of an inch (if any)
is expected south of Point Conception, mainly occuring during the
afternoon. Up to around an inch of snow is possible for mountains
above 5000 ft.
Along with rain, the frontal passage will bring gusty west to
northwesterly winds along the Central Coastal this morning into
this evening. By this afternoon, westerly to northerly winds will
develop across higher terrain, the Santa Barbara southwest coast,
and the western Antelope Valley. Tonight into Christmas morning,
northerly winds will persist from the I-5 Corridor south through
the Santa Clarita Valley and into the northern and western
portions of the San Fernando Valley. Wind Advisories are in effect
for portions of southern California today into Wednesday.
Christmas Day is expected to be sunny and dry with temperatures
mostly in the 60s. The weather on Thursday will be similar, with
most temperatures warming a few degrees to the mid 60s to low 70s.
.LONG TERM (FRI-MON)...24/309 AM.
There remains no significant chances for impactful rain for the
region through at least mid next week. The Central Coast may see
some light rain Friday and again Sunday, as additional weak storm
systems sweep across the area. Very low accumulations are
expected of under a quarter of an inch with each storm. Areas
south of Point Conception are favored to be dry well into next
week.
Mild temperatures in the mid 60s to low 70s will be common late
this week into early next week, with very good chances for
sunshine. A persistent weak-to-moderate offshore wind pattern
will largely keep marine stratus at bay much of the time.
Northerly winds will lead to gusty conditions at times across the
mountains and some canyon and foothill areas, including the I-5
Corridor south through the Santa Clarita Valley portions of the
San Fernando Valley.
&&
.AVIATION...24/0710Z.
At 0612Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 100 ft deep. The top of
the inversion was at 2900 ft with a temperature of 20 C.
Overall, moderate to low confidence in the TAF Package due to low
clouds and fog that are being disturbed by high clouds. A frontal
passage will bring rain chances Tuesday morning into the
afternoon. Cigs may fluctuate between LIFR and IFR, lower
confidence in timing of cat changes.
KLAX...Low to moderate confidence in TAF. There is a 20% chance
of VLIFR conds (1/4SM, VV001-VV002) from 07Z-16Z. No significant
east wind component expected.
KBUR...Moderate confidence in TAF, VSBY is likely to fluctuate
between 2-6SM through around 23Z.
&&
.MARINE...24/425 AM.
After a peak in seas this morning, large and long period W to NW
swell will affect the waters into the weekend. Seas will peak at
15-20 ft in the Outer Waters, 14-18 ft in the inner waters N of
Pt. Sal, and 9-12 ft in the inner waters S of Pt Conception,
including the Santa Barbara Channel. These conditions pose a risk
for damaging breaking waves at times at the Morro Bay and Ventura
Harbor entrances.
Small Craft Advisory (SCA) seas will likely continue in the Outer
Waters and Inner Waters off the Central Coast into the weekend.
There may be a brief reduction in seas Wed eve into Thu, but they
should remain at advisory levels. SCA level seas will affect the
Santa Barbara Channel thru Wed, and the southern inner waters
thru Wed morning.
Along with the high seas, SCA level winds will likely affect the
Outer Waters much of the time thru Thu night, except thru Wed
night in the northern zone (PZZ670). Winds will be near to
occasionally above SCA levels Fri thru Sat in the southern two
zones (PZZ673/676), but will be weaker in the northern zone.
In the inner waters N of Pt. Sal, SCA winds are expected (80%
chance) this afternoon/eve, and are likely (50-60% chance) Wed
afternoon/eve. In the Santa Barbara Channel, SCA level winds are
expected (80% chance) in western portions through early Wed
night, with a 50% chance Thu afternoon/eve. In eastern portions of
the SBA Channel, SCA level winds are likely this afternoon thru
late tonight, with a 40-50% of SCA level winds Wed afternoon/eve.
In the southern inner waters, SCA winds are expected this
afternoon thru Wed morning.
There is a 30% chance of GALE force gusts from Pt Conception to
San Nicolas Island and into far western portions of the Inner
Waters S of Pt Conception this afternoon into tonight.
&&
.BEACHES...24/432 AM.
A large and long period west to northwest swell will bring
dangerously high surf, especially to west and northwest facing
beaches at times into the weekend.
Surf will peak this morning at 18-25 ft on the Central Coast,
12-18 ft on the Ventura County coast and 8-13 ft on west-facing
beaches of L.A. County. Even on west-facing beaches on the south
coast of SBA County, surf will peak at 8-12 ft early today. Surf
will gradually subside later today thru Wed, but periods of high
surf will continue into the weekend.
High Surf Warning will likely be replaced by High Surf Advisories
later today on the Central Coast and the Ventura County Coast.
For the rest of the week, advisory level surf is expected at
times, with confidence highest on the Central Coast and on the
Ventura County Coast.
Minor to moderate coastal flooding is possible near the times of
high tides this morning on the Central Coast and the Ventura
County coast, with nuisance to minor coastal flooding elsewhere.
Nuisance flooding may continue to affect beaches on the Central
Coast and the Ventura County coast at times into the weekend.
Please reference our SRF and CFW products for more details.
