Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
124 PM PST Tue Dec 31 2024
.SYNOPSIS...
Light mountain showers and chilly morning temperatures to ring in
the new year. Another system approaches late week bringing
widespread precipitation, light mountain snow, and chances for
Valley thunderstorms.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
Happy New Year`s Eve! Dry weather and partly cloudy skies prevail
this afternoon with slightly below normal forecast high
temperatures. Scattered high-level clouds are beginning to push
into the area ahead of a weak NYE shortwave trough that will bring
chances for light showers and a dusting of Sierra snow (less than
0.75" or less) tonight into New Year`s Day. Precipitation will be
low impact, falling mainly over the mountains and northern
Sacramento Valley. The National Blend of Models (NBM) calling for
a 20 to 40% chance of 0.25" rain or more over Shasta County with
forecast amounts less than a 0.25" over the Sierra and Coastal
Range. However, isolated light rain or sprinkles will be possible
across the Valley and foothills. Otherwise, dry weather will
continue for much of the area through Thursday afternoon.
In addition to a few showers, chilly AM temperatures will also
help ring in the New Year with patchy fog and fog across the
Valley. Morning low temperatures won`t be as cold as they were this
morning, but are expected to be in the upper 30s to low 40s
through Thursday AM.
Temperatures will follow a gradual warming trend through, before
another system enters the region late Thursday night. Ensembles
depict a more progressive, fast-moving trough moving through
Northern California through Friday which will bring more
widespread precipitation and mountain snow. The bulk of the
precipitation will move through Friday, falling mostly over the
mountains and Shasta County. The NBM shows a 30 to 60% chance of
exceeding 0.5" of rain in the Valley north of I-80, and a 60 to
90% chance over Shasta County, the mountains, and foothills. Snow
levels will initially sit above 7000 feet through Friday morning,
before falling to 5500 to 6500 feet that afternoon through the
evening. The NBM has a 20 to 40% probability of 4 inches or more
above 6000 ft on Friday, though snow showers may linger into
Saturday morning. Finally, Friday afternoon and evening, there is
a 10 to 20% probability for isolated thunderstorms in the Valley
and foothills.
&&
.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Saturday THROUGH Tuesday)...
As the previous system ejects to the east, a few lingering snow
showers will be possible over the Sierra on Saturday. Upper level
ridging then begins to set in over the Pacific Northwest ushering
in a period of dry weather. Chances for light showers over the
Shasta mountains, but ridging is then expected to continue to
build through early next week with breezy north winds on Tuesday.
&&
.AVIATION...

hours.Areas of MVFR/IFR conditions possible in the northern San
Joaquin Valley due to BR and low stratus from 08Z to 19Z

northeastern foothills due to BR, low stratus, and light showers
