.DISCUSSION...

Winds gusts are well over 35+ mph for much of the Sierra and western
Nevada this afternoon, and they will continue through the evening.
Sierra ridge winds are also quite stiff with gusts nearing 90 mph
near Slide Mountain so far today. For details on the fire impacts so
far, see the fire weather section below. With SW/W gusts of 35-45
mph and stronger gusts of 55-65 mph likely for wind prone areas,
there will continue to be fire, aviation, and recreation impacts
through the evening. Plan on bumpy flights into/out of regional
airports, hazardous boating conditions on area lakes, and strong
crosswinds when driving along I-580, US-395 and US-95 -- especially
near Washoe Valley, Honey Lake, and Walker Lake. Also, can`t rule
out areas of blowing dust downwind of dry lake beds.

The winds will take a turn (literally) as a cold front drops through
the area tonight into Saturday morning. Winds will dissipate and
turn N/NW behind the cold front. Winds will remain breezy tomorrow,
particularly for Mineral and Mono County, where gusts may near 40
mph, especially for the southern portions of those counties. The
more formidable concern will be the drop in temperatures, which will
be very unbecoming of the summer solstice that starts this evening!
Highs will plummet from the 80-90 degree heat to the 60s/70s for the
weekend. Overnight low temperatures in the Sierra and northeast CA
will be near or below freezing both on Saturday and Sunday. Prepare
accordingly, especially if you`ve been tending to some spring
gardening. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible each afternoon
through Saturday near the Oregon border and portions of the Sierra.

The trough appears to linger on through Sunday into Monday allowing
for some additional instability and lift aloft that may promote
showers and thunderstorms by Monday afternoon. A handful of
simulations are on board with this solution, so we`re keeping an eye
on it. Beyond that we are slated for a warming trend to begin and
continue through the week.

.AVIATION...

Gusty SW/W winds will continue with surface gusts of 30-40 kts
lasting into the evening. FL100 winds 35-45 kts have resulted in
LLWS and mountain wave turbulence impacts today and will persist
through the evening. Additional LLWS impacts are possible tonight
into early Saturday as a passing cold front shifts winds to N/NW
between 06-12Z. Otherwise, VFR conditions prevail through the
weekend.

.FIRE WEATHER...

...A Red Flag Warning remains in effect for eastern Lassen, Alpine
and Mono counties in CA, and western Nevada, where up to 6-10
hours of critical conditions exist this afternoon and evening...

Stronger winds have arrive with widespread SW/W winds 20-30 mph and
gusts up of 35-45 mph. Some wind prone areas are still expected to
gust as high as 65 mph through the evening. Daytime humidity will be
a bit higher from eastern Lassen County into far northern Washoe
County (15-25%), but compensating winds will maintain the fire
weather concern in this area this afternoon. Overnight recoveries
improve considerably for much of the region tonight into Saturday as
RH increases to 50-80%, but will be poor to marginal across Mineral
and Mono counties.

A cold front passes through the region late tonight into early
Saturday, inducing a wind shift to N/NW. Gusty winds and localized
critical conditions will be confined to Mineral and Mono counties on
Saturday. Otherwise, lighter winds, higher humidities, and cooler
temperatures prevail this weekend.
