AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
1214 AM PDT Sun Jun 22 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Isolated light showers possible early this morning, mainly
in Del Norte County and northern Humboldt. Gusty west and northwest
winds continue for the interior on Sunday. Below normal temperatures
are expected for the interior this weekend. A warming and drying
trend early to mid next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...A cold upper trough continues to move eastward across
the region, bringing scattered cloud cover and a slight chance
for isolated light showers to develop during the early morning
hours of Sunday (after 10Z), especially for coastal Del Norte and
northern Humboldt counties. Light radar returns are confined to
southern Oregon as of 06Z late this evening, but may push further
south (HREF 50 to 60% chance of >0.01 inches).
Otherwise, potential exists for near-frost temperatures within
interior valleys of northern Mendocino and Trinity counties again
overnight. However, HREF only indicates 20 to 40% chance of low
temps <36 degrees by 5AM Sunday morning. This could be further
inhibited by valley fog development and lingering winds, but there
could still be a few pockets of temperatures in the mid 30`s.
Slightly warmer daytime temperatures in the mid to upper 70`s
expected for the interior with continued fire weather concern as
gusty northwesterly winds resume in Mendocino and Lake counties.
A warming and drying trend is forecast early to mid next week with
highs in the lower to mid 90`s Tuesday and Wednesday for the
interior valleys. Breezy diurnal winds and even lower daytime RHs
will prolong fire weather concerns through Wednesday. Morning
coastal stratus returns on Tuesday, lifting and mixing during the
afternoon hours.
Ensembles and deterministic are showing a series of shortwave moving
across the area Wednesday through late next week. The scenario with
those shortwaves would bring temperatures few degrees cooler, but
may also increase west to northwest winds. ZVS/JMM
&&
.AVIATION...06Z TAF: Winds at terminals throughout Northwest
California will gradually calm overnight, especially for coastal
terminals. Stratus has formed around Humboldt County and will
eventually spread to Del Norte County. MVFR conditions have formed
around most Humboldt terminals, while KCEC has remained clear so
far. There is a decently high probability that MVFR conditions will
reach KCEC by early Sunday morning. Ceilings will most likely go no
lower than IFR or very high LIFR conditions for a brief moment
just before sunrise at coastal terminals. Though the exact outcome
can be uncertain, there is little chance (20%) of LIFR
conditions. Gusty north winds will most likely aid in lifting the
ceilings quickly Sunday morning. Most interior terminals are
expected to be VFR, with Ukiah having gusty conditions again
Sunday afternoon.
&&
.MARINE...A deep trough is continuing to push inland, Sunday, with
gentle winds in the northern waters and gale conditions subsiding
into small craft wind conditions for the southern inner waters very
early Sunday morning. Enhanced, though slightly weaker, conditions
will remain Sunday and spread throughout the northern waters by
Sunday night with gusts of 25 to 30 kts. Similar gusty conditions
will continue through at least mid next week as high pressure
gradually forms along shore. The sea state will mostly be controlled
by short period wind waves as steep as 8 feet at 8 seconds. A very
minor northwest swell up to 4 feet at 12 seconds will start to build
around Sunday night through next week.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Breezy to gusty westerly and northwesterlies
breezes continue Sunday. Afternoon humidity in the 20`s to low
30`s percent in eastern Trinity, eastern Mendocino and Lake
counties. The combined of gusty west-nortwest winds yield in
elevated fire weather conditions in zones 264, 277 and 283 through
Sunday. Risk for small and fast spreading grass or brush fires
will increase. Overnight RH recoveries will be good across the
valleys, with moderate humidity recoveries over the higher terrain
in SE Mendocino and Lake counties.
A warming trend is forecast early through mid next week as a surface
high pressure build in. Daytime RH`s trend down as temperatures
increase next week into mid 90`s with breezy NW afternoon winds.
Wednesday through late next week models are in a good agreement on a
series of shortwaves moving across the area. At this point,
ensembles remain dry with temperatures few degrees colder.
However, low afternoon RH`s values and enhancing west`northwest
winds will promote elevated fire weather conditions in Trinity,
interior Mendocino and Lake counties. ZVS
