Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco CA
938 PM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
...New AVIATION...
.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 1205 PM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
Quiet pattern remains through the extended period with
temperatures right around seasonal averages nearly across the
board. Slight cooling trend by the end of next week.
&&
.UPDATE...
Issued at 915 PM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
The SFO-SAC onshore pressure gradient is strong at 4.8 mb while
the marine layer depth is 1000 to 1500 feet in the Bay Area and
upwards of 2000 feet deep along the north Central Coast. Due to
the above mentioned surface pressure gradient, onshore winds will
prevail with the best chance of locally breezy to gusty winds in
the gaps and passes tonight and Sunday morning. Onshore winds will
usher stratus inland tonight and Sunday morning. Otherwise a few
cirrus clouds from earlier convection over the Sierra Nevada will
drift over the Bay Area on easterly winds in the mid to upper
troposphere. For additional info on the forecast please see the
short and long term discussions.
&&
.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Sunday)
Issued at 1205 PM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
Very subdued pattern ongoing currently with seasonal temps and
good onshore flow. Current RAP analysis showing a broad upper
level ridge building over the PNW while a weak closed low remains
separated from the jet stream flow and meandering nearly
stationary off the CA coast. The marine layer is a bit shallower
than 24 hours ago but really not having much sensible impact under
the ridge thanks to the reinforced onshore flow from the closed
low. Inland locations will heat up a few degrees Sunday, but
really not too much impactful change, especially for areas closer
to the coast.
&&
.LONG TERM...
(Sunday night through next Friday)
Issued at 1205 PM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
This pattern largely continues into next week before the ridge
starts to break down and a deeper trough pattern starts to dig
into the West Coast. Once again not much notable change noted with
this subtle pattern change. Temperatures gradually cool a few
degrees through the middle of the week ending up a few degrees
below seasonal normals. The good news is that robust onshore flow
looks to persist through the forecast period which will at least
help to stunt the drying of fire fuels at least through the next
week. Fuels across much of the region remain around or above
seasonal average moisture. Worth keeping in mind that this
includes large fuels as well, so it`s worth noting that fine fuels
such as grasses are indeed very dry and susceptible to easy fire
starts.

.AVIATION...
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 938 PM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
Onshore winds will carry coastal stratus /MVFR-IFR/ inland tonight
and Sunday morning. Stratus mixes out to near the immediate coastline
late Sunday morning and afternoon. Onshore winds prevail during the
06z TAFs.
Vicinity of SFO...Tempo MVFR in stratus 06z-08z then IFR in stratus
for the remainder of tonight and Sunday morning. Stratus will mix
out by late Sunday morning. West to northwest wind 5 to 15 knots late
tonight and Sunday morning. West wind near 15 knots Sunday afternoon
and evening. Stratus /IFR/ returns mid to late Sunday evening.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Stratus /MVFR-IFR/ moving inland overnight.
Stratus /MVFR/ late Sunday morning and afternoon. Evening onshore
winds 5 to 15 knots decreasing to near 5 knots tonight and increasing
to 10 to 15 knots Sunday afternoon and early evening. Stratus /IFR/
returns early Sunday evening and night.
&&
.MARINE...
(Tonight through next Friday)
Issued at 900 PM PDT Sat Jun 7 2025
Mainly light winds will continue across the coastal waters with
moderate sea heights. A strong westerly breeze will develop across
the bays Sunday afternoon and persist through the evening hours.
A low amplitude, long period southwesterly swell arrives Monday
and will cause waves to break in deeper water. Significant wave
heights will remain moderate until a strong NW breeze and rough
seas arrive mid-week.
&&
.MTR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
