Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tucson AZ
234 PM MST Wed Jun 11 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Dry and hot conditions across southeastern Arizona
through the coming week as high temperatures remain several degrees
above normal. Temperatures peak this Saturday through Monday, with
extreme heat across southeast Arizona and highs 8 to 12 degrees
above normal.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Mid-level moisture has lead to cumulus cloud
development along the Mogollon Rim and northern Graham and
Greenlee Counties. There is some isolated thunderstorm activity
east of the CWA in Grant and Sierra Counties of New Mexico. This
activity is expected to stay in New Mexico with just a slight
chance (15 percent) for a thunderstorm or two over the White
Mountains. Otherwise the rest of southeast Arizona will be under
clear skies with high temperatures 2-5 degrees above normal.
High pressure is currently centered just west of Baja and will
slowly migrate eastward over the next couple of days, becoming
centered over southeast Arizona and southern New Mexico this
weekend. After Monday ensembles bring a shortwave into Arizona
which pushes the high to the south. High temperatures through
Friday will be similar to today, around 2-5 degrees above normal.
This weekend into Monday, as the center of the high moves
overhead, temperatures increase to 8-12 degree above normal.
Sunday and Monday will likely be the hottest days with Tucson
seeing a 60% and 40% chance respectively to hit 110 degrees. This
will lead to widespread major HeatRisk Saturday into Monday and
because of this an Extreme Heat Watch is in effect for lower
elevations. After Monday temperatures decrease to around normal or
a couple degree above normal thanks to the shortwave moving
through. Still some uncertainty on the track and speed of the low,
so if it ends up further north temperatures will likely not drop
as much.
&&
.AVIATION...Valid through 13/00Z.
SCT-BKN clouds at 6k-10k ft AGL NE of KSAD through 12/03Z, SKC-
FEW AOA 20k ft AGL elsewhere through the period. There will be a
slight chance of -TSRA in the White Mountains NE of KSAD through
12/02Z. SFC wind WLY/NWLY 10-15 kts with gusts 20-25 kts through
11/03Z becoming variable less than 8 kts overnight. Thursday
afternoon wind speed and direction will be similar to today. The
strongest winds will be at KSAD today and tomorrow. Aviation
discussion not updated for TAF amendments.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Dry conditions are expected across most of southeast
Arizona through early next week, with just a slight chance (10-20
percent) of mainly dry thunderstorms in the White Mountains this
afternoon. Generally single digit min RH values in the valleys,
with mountain locations in the 10-20 percent range. 20-foot winds
will be 15 mph or less from Tucson westward, with occasional
afternoon/early evening gusts to around 25 mph due to the strong
surface heating. East of Tucson, breezy afternoon/early evening
20- foot winds are expected across portions of Cochise and Graham
counties through Thursday, with peak wind speeds of 15-20 mph and
gusts to around 30 mph. The strongest winds will be in the upper
Gila River valley near Safford, with the possibility of a few
hours of near critical fire weather conditions.
