Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
206 AM PDT Fri Aug 15 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Isolated thunderstorms are expected today and Saturday across
eastern Mohave County, with lower confidence for portions of
northeastern Clark County and the Sierra.

* Drier conditions expected Sunday through Tuesday, with signs of
more robust moisture return and warmer temperatures in the second
  half of the week.

.DISCUSSION...Through Thursday.

A shortwave currently located over southern California with ridging
to the east over the Central Plains will maintain a fetch of modest
monsoonal moisture over eastern reaches of the forecast area through
Saturday. Ascent associated with this trough will result in another
round of isolated showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and
evening, mainly over portions of northern and far eastern Mohave
County, with lower confidence for storms to develop westward into
northeastern Clark County. While isolated storms developed over the
eastern Sierra and White Mountains and expanded across portions of
northern Inyo and Esmeralda counties yesterday, drier air filtering
into the region from the west may limit or preclude activity today.
The drier air will continue overspreading the area Saturday, with a
few isolated storms expected over northern Mohave County, though to
a lesser extent than previous days as better moisture is shunted
eastward. The primary threats with storms that develop will remain
lightning, erratic gusty winds, and locally heavy rainfall.

A return to southwesterly flow aloft over the weekend as the
aforementioned trough dampens will result in a fairly substantial
drying trend that will shift precipitation chances to the east of
the area through early next week. Additionally, a subtle decrease in
thicknesses will allow temperatures to cool to slightly below normal
through the weekend, though this relief will be short-lived. The
current ridge anchored over the Central Plains is progged to
retrograde and settle over the Four Corners Region by midweek, which
will be favorable for not only a resurgence of monsoonal moisture
across the area, but also a quick rebound to above normal
temperatures midweek onward. While ensemble guidance is in good
agreement regarding this evolution, the precise location and
strength of the high will dictate how far west convection is able to
develop, with a return of thunderstorm activity possible as early as
Tuesday and Wednesday, potentially increasing through Thursday and
beyond. Stay tuned.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...
Southwest winds of less than 10 knots will continue through the
overnight period. After 16Z, an increase in southeast winds is
expected with gusts over 20 knots possible after 18Z. Gusts will
persist through sunset before falling below 10 knots tomorrow night.
A few areas of convection are possible tomorrow afternoon east of
the Las Vegas Valley. While no storms are expected in the valley,
there is a non-zero chance of outflow winds moving through the area
during the evening hours. If outflows do make it to the valley, a
period of westerly winds of 25 to 30 knots will be possible.
Temperatures above 100 degrees can be expected between 19Z and 02Z,
peaking around 102 degrees during late afternoon.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 00Z Forecast Package...South to southwest winds
will persist through the night across most of the area. The
exceptions will be across the western Mojave Desert where westerly
gusts to 25 knots will continue through 09Z before decreasing, and
in the Owens valley, where north winds of less than 10 knots will be
seen. Winds across the region on Friday will be similar to what was
seen today, with most areas seeing gusts of 20 to 25 knots during
the afternoon. Scattered areas of convection are expected across
northwest Arizona during the afternoon. Localized gusty winds to 25
knots will be possible near this activity.
