Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
1155 AM PST Sun Nov 10 2024
.SYNOPSIS...An incoming trough will bring gusty southwesterly winds
to the area on Monday afternoon and evening, shifting to the
northwest on Monday night and Tuesday. Light snowfall over the
Sierra cannot be ruled out. A deeper system will arrive next
weekend, bringing additional wind, precipitation, and cooler
temperatures.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday.
Light winds prevail tonight before the next weather system arrives
in time for Veterans Day. An upper level low, currently located in
the Gulf of Alaska, will move south and turn into an open wave over
the western United States. Winds turn to the west southwest and
intensify through the day on Monday. The strongest winds should
remain over high terrain. One area of concern is the Spring
Mountains, where strong southwesterly flow will enhance gusts in Lee
and Kyle canyons. There is a 50 to 75 percent chance of gusts in
excess of 58 mph on Monday afternoon and evening on the northeast
side of the mountain range. For this reason, a Wind Advisory has
been issued for the Spring Mountains on Monday from 4 PM to midnight
PST. Enhanced downslope winds may extend far enough to the north and
east to affect Highway 95 and occasional advisory-level gusts may be
possible. Meanwhile, westerly flow over the Sierra means gusty
downslope winds are possible in the Owens Valley, with a 30 to 40
percent chance of gusts in excess of 40 mph along Highway 395.
However, gusts of this magnitude should be localized and sporadic,
therefore a wind headlines do not seem necessary at this time. Winds
shift to the northwest and decrease on Monday night and Tuesday
behind the frontal passage.
Light snowfall is possible over the Sierra on Monday night above
6500 feet. Totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected. There may also be
some light rain showers in the Owens Valley and southern Great Basin
on Monday night with the cold front passage. Otherwise, the rest of
the forecast area should remain dry. Temperatures fall back into
below average territory on Tuesday with highs 5 to 10 degrees colder
than Monday.
.LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Sunday.
Confidence is quite high that another upper-level trough will dig
south through the western CONUS late-week into next weekend,
returning cloudier, breezier, and cooler conditions to the region.
ECMWF, GFS, and Canadian ensemble means are in much closer agreement
regarding the timing of this weekend system than they were 24 hours
ago, with details such as strength and position still uncertain.
&&
.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Light and diurnal wind pattern expected
through much of Monday, with light south to southwest winds in the
nights and mornings and light easterly winds in the afternoons.
South to southwest winds will increase late in the day Monday. No
operationally significant cloud cover.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Winds less than 15 knots are expected areawide today.
Westerly winds will increase over the Sierra crest tonight and peak
on Monday, with a risk of downslope winds and rotors in the Owens
Valley. Over the rest of the region, south to southwest winds will
increase Monday, with gusts of 20 to 30 knots over the southern
Great Basin and western Mojave Desert, except 40 to 50 knots over
and immediately north of the Spring Mountains. No operationally
significant cloud cover.
&&
.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
